Late rally just short for men's basketball at SJU

The St. Olaf men's basketball team went on a 9-0 run with 2:30 to play to cut a 12-point Saint John's advantage to three, but lost 75-70 Wednesday night in Collegeville, Minn.The Oles trailed by as many as 15 in the second half.

Tim Nelson (Sr., Braham, Minn.) and Kevin Jaunich (Sr., Delano, Minn.) had 19 points each to pace the Oles. Justin Bonestroo (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.) added 15 points, four assists and three steals in the loss.

Kevin Buth had 29 points, including 17 in the second frame to lead the Johnnies. Pat McKenzie contributed a double-double with 14 points and 11 assists for Saint John's, who led by four at the break.

Coupled with an Augsburg win, the Oles dropped a half game out of the sixth and final MIAC playoff spot with five games to play.

St. Olaf hosts Bethel College on Saturday at 3 p.m. The game is free of admission and can be heard on 920 AM, KDHL.
