Women's basketball bounced by Blazers

The St. Olaf women's basketball team (5-13) lost to the College of Saint Benedict (17-2) at home on Wednesday, February 5, by a score of 88-74. St. Ben?s jumped out to an early lead in the first half and the Oles were never able to get closer than within five points.

The Oles trailed by about ten points for most of the game and were down 43-34 at the half. Both teams shot well, the Oles shot 40.7 percent in the contest and the Blazers 40.3 percent.

Leading the way in St. Olaf with 15 points apiece were Sara Erickson (Sr, Cambridge, Minn.) and Liz Mundahl (Sr, Eagan,Minn.), who were five-of-seven from the three-point line in the second half. Jill Johnson (Jr, Butterfield, Minn.) went four-for-four from the field and was five-of-six from the free-throw line to score 13 points. Mayme Cupkie (Sr, Owatonna, Minn.) had three blocks and eleven rebounds for the Oles, and Johnson added nine rebounds. Kelly Sweeney (Jr, Oakdale, Minn./Tartan) had seven assists and two steals.

Ashley Brown was five-of-nine from the three-point line to score 20 points for St. Ben?s.

The Oles out-rebounded the Blazers by four and had 20 assists in the contest, but St. Ben?s connected on 12 three-point attempts and had four fewer turnovers. The Bennies shot 78.6 percent from the free-throw line (22-of-28), while St. Olaf was more successful at the line than they have been in previous games, shooting 86.4 percent (19-of-22).

St. Olaf next travels to Bethel College on Saturday, February 8. Game time is 3:00 PM.
