Wrestlers finish near top in UW-Eau Claire meet

The St Olaf wrestling team competed in the UW-Eau Claire Wrestling Invitational Saturday, February 1. Jason Moore (FY, Brooklyn Park, Minn.) took first place at 165 pounds. Skipp Sandberg (FY, Northfield, Minn.) placed second at 174 pounds. St Olaf placed sixth out of ten teams with 28 points.

After receiving a first round bye, Moore beat Logan McLennan (UW-Stevens Point) by decision 8-2 at 165 pounds. Moore won the next match in overtime 3-1 over Ryan Valck (Augsburg). Moore defeated third ranked Rob Doliber (Augsburg) in the finals by decision 11-9 OT to take first place at 165 pounds.

Sandberg won by decision 9-5 over second ranked Sean Fortman (UW-Oshkosh) and Ben Thiem (UW-Parkside) by major decision 11-2 to reach the finals. Sandberg lost to first ranked Cody Koenig (UW-Stevens Point) to take second place at 174 pounds.

Alex Morf (Sr, Mt. Vernon, Iowa) had some notable matches at 149 pounds. Morf defeated Matt Kehoe (UW-Oshkosh) by a pin in 1:18 to start the day off for the Oles. However, Morf had a tough loss to Josh Hammer (Augsburg), though dominating the match, by fall in 4:50. Morf beat Ryan Hansen (UW-Stevens Point) 7-1 and Mark Dugan (St Johns University) 17-5 in the wrestle backs. Morf lost to first seeded Joel Dziedzic (UW-Oshkosh) by fall in 1:18, losing his chance to wrestle for third place.

The Oles will travel to Saint John's University for the North Country Invitational Saturday, Feb. 8 at 10:00 a.m.
