The men's and women's efforts last Saturday, February 8th, against Knights of Carleton College resulted in five new pool records being established. The women's team set two new records, but were unable to stay undefeated in the MIAC conference, and came up short against the Knights, 164.5 to 135.5. The men's team won with a final score of 189 to 105 to remain near the top of the MIAC conference.

The men started off the meet with a record breaking performance in the 200-yard medley relay, when the team of BJ Brent (SR, Ankeny, Iowa) Grant Van Lishout (SR, Reedsville, Wisc.), Anthony Blum (JR, Marshalltown, Iowa) and JC Chambers (FY, Englewood, Colo.) turned in a pool record time of 1:39.80. Mark Glineburg (FY, St. Paul, Minn.) went on to set a new pool record in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:58.27, before the men decided to finish the meet in style with their last pool record in the 400-yard freestyle. This foursome of Blum, Brent, Lee Thomsen (JR, El Cajon, Calif.) and Drew Vanderwert (SO, St. Paul, Minn.) swam to a time of 3:13.67.

Katie Detwiler (SO, Fort Atkinson, Wisc.) and Carly Knoell (FY, Lincoln, Neb.) were the record-breaking performers on the womenıs side. Detwilerıs time of 2:15.41 in the 200-yard butterfly was the fastest time every swam by a women in the Thorpe pool. Knoell had to share her honors with Jenny Grover from Carleton. The women tied in the 100-yard backstroke, both breaking the previous pool record with a time of 1:01. 61, in what turned out to be one of the most exciting events of the meet. These standout backstrokers are both first year studnets and are considered to be one of the premiere match ups in the conference. Knoell and Grover also went head-to-head in the 200-yard backstroke. Grover came out on top in this event with a final time of 2:11. 53 to Knoell's 2:13.30.

Collin Cunningham (SO, University Place, Wash.) and Anna Guenther (SR, Minneapolis, Minn.) were the only double winners for the Ole women. Cunningham had outstanding performances in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions. Her winning score of 253.95 on the three-meter was only one point short of the national qualifying score. Fellow divers Jen Williams (JR, Cambridge, Minn.) and Emily Koeck (SO, Fargo, ND) finished 2nd and 3rd in both competitions, respectively. This sweep by the Ole divers had a huge impact on the final score. Guenther dominated both of the breaststroke events, with final times of 1:09.41 and 2:32.89 in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke, respectively.

The men had their own share of individual wins. Glineburg also turned in wins in the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard butterfly. Glineburgıs time of 2:02.51 was over eight seconds faster then the runner up. He also eclipsed the competition in the 500 with a final time of 4:54.99. VanLishout was also an individual double winner with wins in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke with final times of 1:02.58 and 2:17.41, respectively. Nick Hudson (FY, Madison, Wisc.) won the 200-yard backstroke with a season best time of 2:05.13. Jon Saxton (FY, Ames, Iowa) led the way in the 1000-yard freestyle with a winning time of 10:20.06. Blum also had an individual win with an amazing swim in the 100-yard butterfly. Blumıs time of 53:90 was a lifetime best. Finally, Brad Wourms (SO, Cohasset, Minn.) won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions with final scores of 234.35 and 263.50, respectively.

The Oles will take a break and rest up for the MIAC Championships, which will take place February 20th-22nd at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. This meet is the pinnacle of the season for the Oles where they hope to compete well and send a handful of swimmers and divers to the NCAA Division III National Championship in March.
