Jason Moore Goes To Nationals

The St. Olaf wrestling team finished on a high note this past weekend, placing 6th out of 16 teams at the tough NCAA Great Lakes Regional. Leave it to the NCAA to name a region that extends from Chicago to the Pacific Ocean, Great Lakes! The young Oles beat some strong teams and made quite an impression. Only three colleges had more people place than the Oles, and Jason Moore '06 was the champion of his weight class. Moore will advance to the national championship a week from this Friday.

Senior Alex Morf was in the toughest class and finished 5th after qualifying for nationals the last two years. Alex is an example of the best that St. Olaf can be. An English and theater major, he is a Fulbright finalist who hopes to study theater at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa next year, and is an active member of the AIDS Awareness honor house. Assitant Coach Pete Sandberg will remember him always as the only wrestler he knew who, during his first collegiate competition, left the tournament while still in the winner's bracket to return to campus so he could be made up for a theater performance.

Three other first year students placed in the competition. Ryan Jacobson was 5th, Tony Rezac 5th, and Skipp Sandberg 6th. Each of these Oles defeated wrestlers who were seeded above them.

Also, in two earlier competitions St. Olaf had the Outstanding Wrestlers. Morf was named Outsanding Wrestler at the MIAC duals and Moore was Outstanding Wrestler at the North Country Invitational. In both cases national champion Augsburg was in the mix so these awards are really great achievements for Morf and Moore as well as a tribute to the work of coach Ken Pratt and his assistants. --
