Ole Men place third at MIAC Indoor Championships

The St. Olaf Men's track team gave a very strong team showing this past weekend while hosting the MIAC Indoor Championships in the Tostrud Fieldhouse. Despite obtaining a conference championship in only one event the Oles scored 102 points to finish in third place behind Gustavus Adolphus College and 19 time conference champion University of St. Thomas.

A highlights for the Oles was their ability to score points in 16 out of the 20 events. The Distance Medley Relay won the conference crown with a time of 10.30.75 and was comprised of Jesse Horst, (FY, Minneapolis, Minn/South) Tom Daymont, (FY, Northfield, Minn.) Paul Sovik-Siemens, (So., Hastings, Minn) and anchored by Sam Hauck (FY. Shoreview, Minn./Concordia Academy).

In the field events the Oles placed high in the pole vault through the skill and strength of John Gensmer (Sr. North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View) who placed second with a height of 14-4 * while Neal Olson (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) placed fifth with a vault of 13-5. The shot put also proved to be a high scoring event for the Oles as Pete Cathcart (FY Lakeville, Minn.) placed second with a put of 49-9 and was closely followed by Marcus Hanson (Sr. Billings, Mont.) who placed fourth with a distance of 48-5. Co-Captain Jared Anderson (Sr., Zumbrota, Minn.) put together two strong performances and greatly inspired his teammates throughout the facility by placing eighth in both the triple jump, with a performance of 42-4, and the high jump with a jump of 6-1.

The distance squad turned out in top performances in the 1000 meters with Rob Hillard taking second in 2.31.99 and was closely followed by third place teammate Hauck. Kelly Fulton (So. Billings, Mont.) placed fourth in both the 5000 meters (14.59.81) and 3000 meters (8.45.11). Mark Sullivan finished slightly behind Fulton for fifth in the 3000 meters with a time of 8.46.33. Sullivan also scored again with a fourth place in the 1500 meters in 4.00.35 closely followed by Hillard, in fifth place with a time of 4.02.00 and Chris Coffey (Sr. Dubuque, Iowa/Senior High) in a time of 4.10.52.

Rounding out the distance squad place finishers was Peder Arneson (Jr. Montevideo, Minn.) who took sixth in the 5000 meters with a time of 15.21.23 and Horst who placed fifth in the 800 meters with a time of 1.56.50.

The sprinting squad was lead by Ryan Noreen (Sr. Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) who took third in the 400 meters(49.77), fifth in the 200 meters(22.59), and seventh in the 55 meter dash(6.64). Noreen also ran on the 4x400 meter relay, which placed fourth in a time of 3.24.36 and included Daymont, Nathan Campbell (So. Monona,Wis/Monona Grove), and Dane Hamann (FY. Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor). Kyle Korynta (Sr. Grand Forks, N.D./Central) scored a fifth place finish in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.46. The 4x200 meter relay placed eighth in a time of 1.34.36 and was comprised of Chad Thomas (Sr. Menomonie,Wis), Daymont, Joe May (FY, Northfield, Minn./Trinity) and Gaute Johnsen (Sr. Akershsus, Norway).
