Students, professor testify to Legislature on behalf of TRiO programs

Amy Gage
February 26, 2003

On Feb. 25, St. Olaf College students Angelica Torralba and Viqui Carballo, along with Professor of Education Mark Schelske, testified on behalf of the Minnesota Private College Council to the Minnesota Senate Higher Education Budget Committee. The goal of the hearing was to inform legislators and the public about contributions and services that Minnesota's private college make to communities in the state. Schelske provided background information about federally funded TRIO (Educational Talent Search, Upward Bound and Student Support Services) and GEAR UP programs. Torralba and Carballo made presentations about their involvement in St. Olaf's TRiO programs, which began when they were in ninth grade at Washburn High School in Minneapolis. The audience included nine senators and legislative aides, and about 75 observers.
