Women's Hockey Defeats St. Mary's in Overtime

On Saturday, February 15, the Oles traveled to Winona to face the Cardinals of St. Mary's University. The Oles dominated the first period out shooting the Cardinals 9 to 3. At 7:41 in the first period, Erin Baxter (So, Rosemount, Minn.) scored a power-play goal for the Oles with the assist from Melissa Mueller (Fr, Lakeville, Minn.). Soon after, at 9:35, the Oles brought their lead to 2-0 with a 5 on 3 power-play goal by Lindsay Weier (Fr, Menomonie, Wis.). The assists were awarded to Baxter and Britny Schultheis (So, Shoreview, Minn.). Late in the first period, St. Mary's answered back with a power-play goal of their own at 17:10.

Early in the second period, at 0:53, St. Mary's scored again to tie the game at 2-2. The Oles had to play a defensive second period facing a total of 13 shots. The tie score made the third period quite a battle with both teams trying to win the game. The third period ended with the score still 2-2 and the game went into overtime. The Oles did not allow any shots on goal in overtime and put a total of two on the Cardinal goalie in the first 1:59. At 1:59, the Oles scored the game-winning goal. Jennifer Welch scored with assists from Baxter and Kate Barnett (So, Burnsville, Minn.).

Ole goaltender, Kerry Rollwagen (So, Mendota Heights, Minn.) had a total of 21 saves for the game. Key efforts were put forth by Baxter and Welch. The Oles will next face the Cardinals againat 2:30pm at the Northfield Ice Arena on Sunday, February 16.
