In celebration of this year's Northfield Sesquicentennial celebration, St. Olaf College has commissioned Timothy Mahr '78 to compose a work for the Northfield High School Concert Band. Mahr plans to complete the work in time for the band to perform it -- under Mahr's baton -- during their Winter Concert in February.

"The band kids will be very excited when they return this fall to find out that something's being written for them by a nationally known composer," says Leon Haefner, conductor of the Northfield High School Band.

In addition to his duties as a professor of music and conductor of the St. Olaf Band, Mahr has composed more than 50 works that have been performed by such ensembles as the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, the Dallas Wind Symphony and the Goldman Memorial Band of New York City.
