Barbara Fraumeni, a leading authority on economic growth and productivity, will discuss the current state of the American economy during a pair of lectures she will deliver at St. Olaf College on Monday, April 7, and Tuesday, April 8.

Fraumeni is a professor of public policy at the University of Southern Maine and former chief economist for the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the federal agency that tracks overall economic activity. The lecture she will deliver Monday, titled "There's More Than One Way to Grow: GDP, R&D and Education," will begin at 7 p.m. in Science Center Room 282. The lecture she will deliver Tuesday, titled "Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down: Tracking the State of the Economy," will begin at 3:30 p.m. in Holland Hall 413.

Fraumeni chairs the Ph.D. program in public policy and is associate dean for research at the University of Southern Maine's Muskie School of Public Service. She is a member of the academic advisory council of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Her current research includes economic accounting systems and the measurement of productivity and physical capital for use in public policy decision-making.

Her lectures are funded by the Kleber-Gery Lecture Fund, established by an alumnus of St. Olaf College in honor of Professors Emeriti Richard Kleber and Frank Gery. The generosity of this friend of the college allows the Economics and Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science departments to sponsor one or two speakers each year who bring expertise of interest to both departments.
