Civic engagement lecture Tuesday

April 17, 2008

As part of St. Olaf College's focus on global citizenship, University of Minnesota Professor of Political Science Elizabeth Beaumont will give a lecture titled "Educating Citizens" on Tuesday, April 22, at 3:15 p.m. in Viking Theater, Buntrock Commons.

Beaumont will sign copies of her book, Educating Citizens, following the lecture. The event is free and open to the public.

Beaumont's research and teaching focus at the University of Minnesota has been on the intersections of democratic and constitutional theory and practice, including political theory, civic education and engagement, and constitutional development. Prior to joining the Political Science Department, Beaumont was a research scholar at the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching in Stanford, Calif. She helped lead the foundation's research on civic education and engagement in undergraduates.

Beaumont's other book that is based on her Carnegie research is Educating for Democracy.

In 2006 St. Olaf began a two-year commitment to reflecting on the theme of Global Citizenship through a series of lectures and events. The focus of the theme's final semester is "Civic Engagement and the Liberal Arts," through which the college community is asked to consider the public purpose of a liberal arts education.
