St. Olaf Assistant Professor of Piano Christopher Atzinger was recently named the first place award winner of the International Piano Institute of Santa Fe's 2007-08 World International Competition.

The award for the competition, which took place last September, includes a cash prize of $10,000 and a winner's concert. Atzinger will perform that concert during the presentation of the award in November. This most recent accomplishment adds to the awards Atzinger won last summer.

Each World International Competition brings together musicians of all ages and national origins who excel in the art of playing the piano. The competition begins with a round in which judges screen taped performances, after which selected participants travel to Los Alamos, N.M., for a 45-minute judged recital performance.

"I felt good about my performance, as I felt like I was connecting with the audience," Atzinger says. "That said, though, there are always some little things that can be improved."
