Opening convocation for St. Olaf College will take place Thursday, Sept. 10, beginning at 11:10 a.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel. Solveig Zempel, professor of Norwegian and the current Boldt Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Humanities, will give the address. The event, which is open to the public and will be streamed live and archived online, will include a formal procession by faculty. The St. Olaf Band, conducted by Timothy Mahr '78, will provide music.

Zempel, who has taught at St. Olaf since 1976, will present her talk, "We Are Migrants, All," that will offer some thoughts on immigration and explore how to honor our immigrant heritage. The event officially kicks off the college's 2009-10 academic theme of "Migration" that will feature a variety of presentations througout the year by sociologists, economists, political scientists, and natural scientists who will discuss historical and current movements of people, animals and plants.
