St. Olaf welcomes Class of 2013

Members of the Class of 2013 gathered during their first day on campus to hear advice about college life from Associate Dean of Students Rosalyn Eaton-Neeb '87 -- the first of many orientation sessions for the new students.

St. Olaf College welcomed the 777 members of the Class of 2013 to campus Sept. 5. They represent 42 states and 13 foreign countries. Fifteen percent are the first generation of their families to attend college and -- continuing the trend to diversify the student body -- 14 percent are multicultural.

As for academics, 21 percent of the incoming class earned a perfect 4.0 grade in high school, while 82 percent ranked in the top quarter of their class -- including 124 who ranked No. 1 or 2. The class also includes 37 National Merit Scholars and 63 Buntrock Scholars -- a highly competitive St. Olaf scholarship program that is granted to incoming students after interviews with faculty members. It is based on academic performance along with such factors as demonstrated initiative, a sense of humor, and concern for others.
