This year, six Gates Millennium Scholars are attending St. Olaf (L-R, clockwise from back): Phoua Xiong ’12, Serena Xiong ’13, Mai Tong Vang ’10, Vue Yang ’11, Kosaizee Yang ’11, and Kia Her ’12.

Currently in its tenth year, the Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) program assists college- and graduate school-bound African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Hispanic American and Asian Pacific Islander American students who show high achievement and demonstrate significant financial need. Over the past 10 years more than 13,000 GMS students have attended some 15,000 institutions of higher education. The program has provided more than $500 million in scholarships, and students have achieved a 90 percent graduation rate — double the national average of students from comparable backgrounds.
