Two St. Olaf students named Smaby Peace Scholars

St. Olaf students Maria Ward ’12 and Madeline Buck ’11 have been named Smaby Peace Scholars — a program aimed at deepening students’ understanding of issues related to peace, justice, democracy, and human rights. The two will attend the Oslo International Summer School (ISS) this June and July, along with eight other students selected as Peace Scholars from the Nobel Peace Prize Forum Consortium of Augustana (Sioux Falls), Augsburg, Concordia (Moorhead), Luther, and St. Olaf colleges.

While at ISS Buck and Ward will participate in regular courses alongside students from more than 90 countries. The two also will take a seminar specifically for Peace Scholars, where they will develop projects to present at the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize Forum. The seminar will provide an introduction to the issues surrounding the current Nobel Peace Prize and the work of peace organizations and institutions in Norway, including the International Peace Research Institute and the Nobel Institute.

When Buck and Ward return to St. Olaf they will continue to build on the Oslo experience by playing leadership roles in peace activities and assisting with the 2011 forum.

The scholarship was established by the late Philip Carlyle Smaby, a Minneapolis St. Paul philanthropist who attended St. Olaf and three of whose children are alumni.
