Goldwater Scholars Erin Seybold '11 and Jeff Stamp '11 are both conducting research that relates to climate change.

St. Olaf students Erin Seybold '11 and Jeff Stamp '11 have been chosen to receive Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships for the 2010–11 academic year. The two were selected from more than 1,100 applicants who were nominated by faculty and chosen based on academic achievement and proposals that detailed ongoing research. Ashley Petersen '11 received an honorable mention.

Working with Assistant Professor of Biology John Schade, Seybold is examining the conditions that create nitrous oxide emissions and how the phenomenon relates to global warming. She plans to earn a Ph.D. in aquatic biogeochemistry, conduct research in the Arctic, and teach at the university level.

Stamp, along with Professor of Physics Robert Jacobel, is looking at how East Antarctic ice sheet stability works as a climate change predictor. He plans to attend graduate school in the mathematical sciences.

This year the foundation awarded 278 scholarships (worth up to $7,500) to mathematics, science, and engineering students, including five other students from Minnesota schools (Jacobel's daughter, Allison, among them). Twenty-eight St. Olaf students have been named Goldwater Scholars since 1995.
