Learning about leadership

Samantha Sickbert ’11 has a year left at St. Olaf, but she's already found the vocation she'd like to pursue: helping create leadership programs within inner-city schools. This summer, she'll move one step closer to realizing that goal through advanced leadership training at the Hesselbein Global Academy.

Sickbert will join 49 other students from around the globe at the University of Pittsburgh this July for the Student Leadership Summit, a conference that brings together distinguished mentors and students to work toward effective change.

“I’m hoping to develop my own leadership skills while learning more about how to work with others,” she says. “I’m also looking forward to meeting with the mentors because I think they’ll have good advice.”

At St. Olaf, Sickbert is involved in many activities, including the women’s soccer team and the Black and Gold Corps. She has been a member of the Board of Regents Student Committee for three years and looks forward to serving as student chair for the committee in the fall. Currently Sickbert, a psychology major, is working at an elementary school in St. Paul to help implement DreamScape Experience, a program that seeks to empower young people by helping them realize their goals.
