Carlsen selected for leadership program
July 8, 2010
For the third year in a row, a St. Olaf delegate will participate in a series of Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) workshops. Professor of Social Work and Family Studies and Department Chair Mary Carlsen '79 will take part this year in the conferences that help women in higher education administration develop leadership and management skills.
Over the course of the next year, Carlsen will attend four HERS sessions at Wellesley College. During this time, she says she hopes to discover whether her skills or interests match those that are needed in higher education administration. She's also looking forward to meeting women from a variety of American colleges and universities.
Carlsen says she's "honored and fortunate" to be nominated for participation by St. Olaf President David R. Anderson '74. She is also the recipient of the Schmieder Leadership Scholarship, an initiative forwarded by the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA) for leadership development of female faculty at ELCA colleges.
Most recently, Kathy Ruby, assistant vice president for enrollment and dean of student financial aid, and Pamela McDowell, associate dean of students and director of residence life, participated in similar programming in 2008 and 2009, respectively.
