Achberger presents at 'Writing Against War' symposium

St. Olaf Professor of German and Department Chair Karen Achberger presented an invited paper as part of a recent international symposium at Syracuse University.

The symposium, titled Lay Down Your Weapons: Writing Against War, was devoted to one of Austria’s most influential postwar writers, Ingeborg Bachmann (1926–73). Achberger’s paper, titled “Composing After Ausschwitz,” connects Bachmann’s musical way of writing to her lifelong struggle against war and the Holocaust. The paper will be published later this year in the volume Lay Down Your Weapons: Writing Against War. It be published in German and English in a dual-language edition by the publishing house Koenigshausen & Neumann in Wuerzburg, Germany.

The Bachmann symposium was part of the semester-long Syracuse Symposium 2010 focused on the topic “Conflict: Peace and War.”
