Classics student earns national award

St. Olaf has had at least one student earn top honors in a national contest for classics students every year since 1980 — and this year was no exception.

Emily Marie Sandquist '13, a classics major from Singapore, took third place in the Advanced Latin Translation portion of this year's Maurine Dallas Watkins Translation Contests. Last year she took first place in the Intermediate Latin Translation portion of the competition.

Eta Sigma Phi, the classics honor society for college and university students, awarded Sandquist one of 18 prizes at its national convention held at the University of Texas. With at least one student placing in the contest every year for more than three decades, St. Olaf has the best record in the Maurine Dallas Watkins Contests of any school in the country.
