St. Olaf students to host Dan Rather

By David Gonnerman '90

Dan Rather, managing editor and anchor of the television news magazine Dan Rather Reports and former news anchor for CBS Evening News, will speak at St. Olaf Thursday. The title of his talk is "An Evening with Dan Rather: My Thoughts and Observations." The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the student-run St. Olaf Political Awareness Committee.

During Rather's four-decade career with CBS — including, at 24 years, the longest run by an evening news anchor — he covered such U.S. events as the Kennedy assasination, the Civil Rights Movement, Watergate, and more than a dozen presidential campaigns. He's also traveled the globe to cover the Vietnam War, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, September 11, and the U.S. wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Past PAC-sponsored speakers at St. Olaf include activist Jesse Jackson, former U.S. Senator Bob Dole, Hotel Rwanda hero Paul Rusesabagina, former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura, Democratic strategist Donna Brazile, and Republican strategist Karl Rove.

Rather's talk will be streamed live online (and will not be archived).
