After years of helping St. Olaf students identify and pursue their vocation in the health care field, Professor of Biology Ted Johnson has been honored with an award for outstanding advising.

Johnson, who chairs the Health Professions Committee at St. Olaf, recently received the Father Joseph L. Walter Award for Outstanding Health Professions Advising from the Central Association of Advisors for the Health Professions. Each year, the award recognizes one person from the Midwest who has shown outstanding commitment to advising in health professions. Johnson's colleagues at the University of Minnesota, Judy Beniak and Tricia Todd, nominated him for this award.

Jon Hallberg '88, now a family physician in Minneapolis, has known Johnson as an advisor, colleague, and friend. "I count myself lucky to know him, to see him work, and to realize what great, important work he has done and continues to do in advising pre-health professions students," Hallberg wrote in a letter supporting the nomination. "It is fair to say Ted is the absolute embodiment of what a good advisor can and should be."

An on-campus reception in Johnson's honor will be held May 18.
