Carullo presents

By Amy Lohmann '14

Professor of Romance Languages Sylvia Carullo was invited to present a paper as the guest of I International Congress History, Literature, and Art in Cinema in Spanish and Portuguese last month at the University of Salamanca in Spain.

Carullo's paper, which was a portion of her sabbatical research, dealt with the novel The Ugly Christ by contemporary Ecuadorian writer Alicia Yánez Cossío. In her paper, Carullo demonstrates how the author uses the novel to question her surrounding society by blending her concern about marginal Ecuador with Renaissance religious paintings. Carullo focused on the levels of representation in the book. "Cossío stimulates the reader's imagination, encouraging visions of dramatic scenes of the Ecuadorian reality," says Carullo. "The fusion of these symbolic images with allusions to Christ's Passion present disturbing pictures of distinct spirituality."
