Norwegians honor Lovoll for media history

In September Professor Emeritus of History and Norwegian Odd Lovoll will be awarded the Fritt Ords Honnør in recognition of his scholarly contributions to the history of the Norwegian-American press.

He will be given the award at a ceremony at the Fritt Ord Foundation's headquarters in Oslo, Norway, where he will also deliver a presentation on Norwegian-American history. The Fritt Ord Foundation was established in 1974 to "protect and promote freedom of expression and the environment for freedom of expression in Norway, especially by encouraging lively debate and the courageous use of free speech."

The Fritt Ords Honnør acknowledges remarkable efforts to promote free speech. The foundation financed Lovoll's research for his most recent publication, Norwegian Newspapers in America, and will also fund the publication of the Norwegian-language edition. Lovoll was editor of the Norwegian American Historical Association from 1980 to 2000, where he produced 32 NAHA publications, and also became the first holder of the King Olav V Chair in Scandinavian Studies at St. Olaf.
