Emeritus faculty member Frederick Stoutland dies

Professor Emeritus of Philosophy Frederick Stoutland '54 died recently in Helsinki, Finland. He was 78. Stoutland taught at St. Olaf for 35 years before retiring in 1996. He later was named permanent visiting professor of philosophy at Uppsala University in Sweden.

Stoutland was an internationally known scholar on action theory and theories of truth in philosophies of language. Awards During his career he earned numerous awards and recognitions, including three grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and one from the American Council of Learned Societies for study at Oxford University. He also taught at Helsinki University as a Fulbright Fellow.

In 1999 when a tree was planted in his honor in "Philosopher’s Grove" just west of Holland Hall, Stoutland mused: "May these trees flourish as a symbol of what we have taken from and given to this college, and may they long outlive us, to be enjoyed even by those who have long forgotten us or never knew who we were."
