The American Library Association has awarded Chris Raschka '81 the 2012 Randolph Caldecott Medal for A Ball for Daisy, a wordless story of a dog’s busy day with a red ball. The ALA awards the prestigious annual prize "for the most distinguished American picture book for children." Raschka’s illustration of The Hello, Goodbye Window by Norton Juster won the medal in 2006, and he also earned a Caldecott Honor in 1994 for Yo! Yes?

Raschka (named Chris Durnbaugh while at St. Olaf) dabbled in art while majoring in biology, but "I would not have dreamed in a thousand and one years that 25 years hence I would be writing and illustrating children’s books,” he told St. Olaf Magazine in a 2008 profile. “My education there prepared me perfectly for what I do now.”
