'Metro' looks at Merritt's McKnight

Twin Cities Metro magazine recently checked in with St. Olaf Associate Professor of Music Justin Merritt to find out how his McKnight Foundation grant is shaping up. Not surprisingly, he told them he's excited by the opportunities and creative freedoms the award allows. "With some of the financial pressure off, he’s hoping to be able to focus on composing 'longer, impractical music, like opera — the most impractical of all!'

"While there is plenty of hardship facing contemporary composers, such as getting work published and performed, Merritt seems to effortlessly bypass these obstacles, having had much of his work receive critical acclaim."
