The Student Life Division has named Associate Professor of French Jolene Barjasteh and Professor of Spanish Leon Narvaez this year's winners of the Gertrude Hilleboe Award for Faculty Involvement in Student Life.

Barjasteh's nomination notes that "students respond appreciatively to Barjasteh's work as a teacher, mentor, and friend — inside as well as outside the classroom." She has been teaching at St. Olaf since 1984.

According to Narvaez' nomination, he "reflects his belief that part of the role of a St. Olaf professor is to stimulate student learning outside of class and to relate that learning to what takes place in the classroom." He joined the St. Olaf faculty in 1970.

The two faculty members will be presented with the award April 26, and their names will be added to the honorary plaque outside the Dean of Students Office.

The award honors Gertrude Hilleboe's commitment to students during the more than 40 years she served as a faculty member and dean of women. Hilleboe was well-known for her individual interest in every student with whom she came in contact as well as her dedication to the St. Olaf community.
