Grant supports physics and engineering camp for girls

For the third consecutive year, St. Olaf College has received a $5,000 grant from Xcel Energy to support a summer physics and engineering camp for girls.

The camp, which this year will take place July 8–13, gives high school girls hands-on engineering experience by having them work in small groups to build a Rube Goldberg machine. Participants will work with the college faculty who supervised the team of St. Olaf students that won the 2012 national Rube Goldberg Machine Contest.

Through its grants, Xcel supports nonprofit organizations that improve science, technology, engineering, economics, and math education; improve and enhance the natural environment; help individuals achieve economic self-sufficiency; and provide access to arts and culture. Last year the company gave a total of $3.9 million in grants to organizations across its eight-state service territory, which includes Minnesota.
