Women's Tennis Earns 5th Place in MIAC
APRIL 29, 2003 — The Ole women's tennis team earned a fifth-place MIAC finish with its participation in the conference tournament on April 25 and 26 at Gustavus Adolphus College.

Women's Track and Field Compete at Macalester Invitational
APRIL 29, 2003 — The St. Olaf Women's Track and Field team traveled to the Macalester Invitational this past Saturday. Competing in 'typical' summer weather, the Oles used it to their advantage as many broke their own personal records.

Religious convictions topic of noon seminar
APRIL 29, 2003 — Is it possible to properly respect the beliefs of others without losing a grip on our own convictions? How can we talk about the truth of our religious perspective without courting the dangers of absolutism? Dan Malotky, an assistant professor of religion at St. Olaf College, will answer those questions and more during a dialogue session titled "Religious Convictions and Public Life." The noontime event, free and open to the public, will be in the Viking Theater in Buntrock Commons. Audience members are encouraged to bring a lunch. A light dessert will be served.

"American culture appears caught on the horns of a dilemma," Malotky says. "We continue to see the dangers of religious intolerance, and as a consequence, we are wary of the authoritarian tendencies with which religious truths are often imbued. "On the other hand, we are nervous about relativist positions that dump all religious truth into the same, publicly irrelevant basket."

Baseball takes two from Auggies
APRIL 27, 2003 — The St. Olaf baseball team had two stellar pitching performances from Charlie Ruud (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) and Matt Green (So., Minneapolis, Minn./South) in a two-game sweep of Augsburg Sunday afternoon at home. The Oles held on 4-1 in the first game and exploded for a 27-2 win in game two.

Treat yourself to an evening of Early Music
APRIL 25, 2003 — The St. Olaf Early Music Singers and Collegium Musicum, under the direction of Gerald Hoekstra, will present their spring concert on Friday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Urness Recital Hall. The program will feature music from 16th- and 17th-century England. Composers on the program include William Byrd ("Mass for Five Voices"), John Ward, John Coperario and others working at the royal court or in the households of English nobility.

Other works to be performed by the singers include the psalm Laudebus in sanctis, madrigals by John Ward and Orlando Gibbons, and an anthem by Matthew Jeffries. The Collegium will perform dances, fantasias and other types of instrumental music by John Coperario, John Jenkins and Anthony Holborne. The St. Olaf Early Music Singers is an ensemble of 18 select singers who devote their efforts to performance of early historical choral music. The Collegium Musicum performs on instruments of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, such as viols, recorders, crumhorns, shawms, cornetts and sackbuts.

APRIL 25, 2003 — The St. Olaf men's tennis team fell to St. Thomas 9-0, Friday afternoon in the Conference quarterfinals. St. Olaf was playing without their top two players, juniors Tom and Ted Nagel.

APRIL 24, 2003 — This evening at 8 p.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra will perform with conductor Andreas Delfs and feature violinist Gil Shaham. The concert is free and open to the public.

Baseball opens with 9-6 win over SMU, drops game two in 11 innings
APRIL 24, 2003 — The St. Olaf baseball team scored a combined eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings to capture a game one victory 9-6, but fell in 11 innings in game two 3-2 to Saint Mary's University in Winona, Minn. Wednesday.

Norwegian social scientist Irene Garland will speak at St. Olaf on Monday, April 28, about how Norwegian women, though independent-minded, have become a force in politics -- getting elected to parliament and placing their issues on the political agenda. Garland's talk is free and open to the public.


Soderlind named associate dean for social and applied sciences
APRIL 24, 2003 — Professor of Economics Steven Soderlind will be the new Associate Dean for Social and Applied Sciences, effective June 1. He will replace Samiha Sidhom Peterson, a sociology professor who held the post for six years. Soderlind joined the St. Olaf faculty in 1982. In addition to chairing the economics department and serving as director of Urban Studies, he has taught in the Upward Bound program and The Great Conversation. Soderlind also has led Interims abroad, served as the field supervisor for Term in Asia and been a member of many college committees.

Patricia Weaver Francisco to read from memoir of rape
APRIL 23, 2003 — Author Patricia Weaver Francisco will read from her memoir Telling at 7:30 p.m. this evening in Buntrock Commons, Sun Room, followed by a book signing. Telling chronicles Francisco?s healing process after being raped by a stranger in the middle of the night in her Minneapolis home. The event is sponsored by the WomanSafe honor house. Telling is available in the St. Olaf Bookstore.

Women's tennis finish regular season with loss at Gustavus
APRIL 23, 2003 — The Gustavus Adolphus College women's tennis team showed why they are the premier team in the MIAC, defeating St. Olaf 9-0 Tuesday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn. There were competitive matches and quality points played by each team.

Speaking in Tongues, an international experience
APRIL 23, 2003 — Four international musicians speaking in four native languages, known as 'Speaking in Tongues,' will perform this evening at 7 p.m. in The Pause. Musicians include drummer Sowah Mensah, a native of Ghana who is adept at a wide range of West African drumming styles; bassist Enrique Toussaint from Mexico City who has toured with Paul Anka and Herb Alpert; American percussionist, composer Marc Anderson whose background includes music from America, Africa, India and the Middle East; and Gao Hong, a native of China who studied at the Central Conservatory of Music in Bejing, is a master of the Chinese four-stringed lute, the pipa.

APRIL 22, 2003 — The St. Olaf Baseball team swept Bethel College 4-1 and 3-1 Tuesday afternoon at Mark Almli Field. Complete game, one-run pitching performances from Charlie Ruud (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) and Matt Green (So., Minneapolis, Minn./South) sparked the sweep. The Oles have won ten of their last 11.

St. Olaf conference on sexuality, spirituality draws national press
APRIL 22, 2003 — Two former bishops of the ELCA told a St. Olaf-sponsored conference on sexuality and spirituality that the church must welcome all people, regardless of sexual orientation. This article, which appeared on the ELCA web site, followed the April 2003 event.

Religion professor urges caution in justifying U.S. war against Iraq
APRIL 21, 2003 — The views of Reinhold Niebuhr -- "arguably the greatest of America's theologians" -- are being used by conservatives, and often erroneously so, to chastise church leaders who have spoken against the war in Iraq, says St. Olaf College Assistant Professor of Religion Dan Malotky.

'Emily Klamm, come on down!'
APRIL 21, 2003 — St. Olaf sophomores Emily Klamm, Laura Taylor and Samantha Jensen and their friend Hilary Young drove 2,000 miles to spend their spring break with Bob Barker in Los Angeles. Once inside the television studio, the group got the attention of "The Price is Right" producers by singing "Um! Yah! Yah!," the college rouser. When interviewed, Klamm, of Mount Prospect, Ill., secured a spot on the program by convincing the producers that meeting Bob Barker was a lifelong dream. Once a contestant, Klamm went up against the audience favorite, a 92-year-old Canadian woman. Klamm came out on top, winning $24,398, a trip to Madrid, Spain, and an autographed picture of Bob Barker. "The Price is Right" episode with Klamm airs in the Twin Cities on Wednesday, April 23, at 10 a.m. on WCCO-TV, Channel 4.

More parents pay to match their children with the right college
APRIL 21, 2003 — Six percent of high school seniors in the class of 2002 paid for private admissions counselors to steer them toward the right college choice. A recent story syndicated by the Knight Ridder News Service tells the story of one such student -- Joe Schultz of Olathe, Kan. -- who learned through a counselor that St. Olaf College was the perfect choice for him.

Reviewer calls St. Olaf Choir 'extraordinary' and 'a chorus of angels'
APRIL 21, 2003 — Both the Minneapolis-based Star Tribune and the St. Paul Pioneer Press had high praise for the St. Olaf Choir's performances of Faure's "Requim" in April with the Minnesota Orchestra. The Pioneer Press noted the singers' 'gratifying maturity.'

St. Olaf students raise record amount of money for St. Jude's kids
APRIL 20, 2003 — Earlier this spring, students at St. Olaf College participated in an event on campus like no other. The philanthropic extravaganza, called Up 'Til Dawn, was the grand finale to a months-long fund-raising effort to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

The second-annual event, held March 14 on campus, featured a variety of team-based competitions and special guests. Each student raised $125 for the opportunity to participate. In total St. Olaf students raised more than $18,000 -- through student-sponsored cafeteria "fasts," bake sales, letter-writing campaigns and "date" auctions -- for the children who are hospitalized at St. Jude, an internationally recognized biomedical research center dedicated to finding cures for catastrophic childhood diseases.

Local St. Jude patient Zach Cochran and his mother, Beri, attended the event and shared their personal story about Zach's courageous fight with cancer. Zach also participated with the students in many of the competitions held throughout the night. All patients at St. Jude's, which was founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, are treated regardless of their ability to pay. This year's fund-raising efforts topped the goal by $8,000.


St. Olaf to host annual Easter candlelight vigil
APRIL 19, 2003 — The Great Easter Vigil, a candlelight service, will be held Saturday, April 19, at 8 p.m. at Boe Memorial Chapel on the St. Olaf College campus. The annual event is a collaboration among the college and the Lutheran congregations in Northfield, including Bethel, St. John's and St. Peter's. St. Olaf pastors Bruce Benson and Jennifer Koenig will preside, and a massed choir of volunteers from St. Olaf music ensembles and the various church choirs will perform. John Ferguson, the Elliot and Klara Stockdal Johnson Professor of Organ Music, will be organist. All are welcome at this public event.

APRIL 18, 2003 — The St. Olaf men's tennis team lost 6-3 in their last regular season match against Carleton on April 16. The Oles are looking forward the conference meet at St. Olaf on Friday, April 25.

Women's tennis falls to Carleton
APRIL 18, 2003 — The St. Olaf women's tennis team were swept in doubles competition in their match against Carleton on April 16. Despite two convincing singles wins, close matches swung towards the Knights in the 7-2 defeat.

St. Olaf Choir performs with Minnesota Orchestra
APRIL 18, 2003 — The St. Olaf Choir will perform with the Minnesota Orchestra on April 17 and 18, in a performance of Fauré's Requiem. Great Conversation program selects 'student of the year'

Christopher Schifani, a sophomore from Albuquerque, N.M., was named "Student of the Year" on April 9 by professors who teach in The Great Conversation program at St. Olaf College. The program, which focuses on the epochs of Western literature, was launched at the college more than two decades ago.

?In celebrating [this student],? said Professor of Religion and Director of The Great Conversation Edmund Santurri, ?we celebrate an individual as a representative of a community that has formed over two years and five courses led by a remarkable group of teachers.? Schifani said the award reminded him "that I have something to learn from everyone as much as to contribute.?

In addition to academic achievement, criteria for the scholarship award include a demonstrated love of the great works, ideas and artistic moments of the Western tradition; dexterity of mind that allows for critical reflection; and enjoyment of ?conversation? about the great works and ideas in a way that promotes intellectual exchange and community. 'Soul of a Citizen' author to examine civic (dis)engagement

Author and activist Paul Rogat Loeb will speak Wednesday, April 16, at St. Olaf College -- at 10:10 a.m. at Boe Memorial Chapel and at 7 p.m. in the Pause in Buntrock Commons. Steen among math experts working with state education commissioner
APRIL 15, 2003 — Professor of Mathematics Lynn Steen, a nationally recognized expert on mathematics education who also serves as director of institutional resources and planning at St. Olaf College, is among three academicians who will advise Minnesota Education Commissioner Cheri Pierson Yecke on proposed new standards for math and language arts in the public schools. APRIL 12, 2003 — The Wheaton men's tennis team defeated St. Olaf on Friday, April 11, in Northfield. Juniors Ted and Tom Nagel provided the sole point for the Oles with a decisive victory at No. 1 doubles.

APRIL 12, 2003 — The St. Olaf baseball team completed a sweep of Macalester, erupting for six runs in the fifth inning to win game two 8-4. The Oles won the first game 10-4.

Senior student art showcased at renovated Dittmann Center
APRIL 11, 2003 — Paintings, photographs, drawings, prints and sculptures are on display at the annual St. Olaf College senior art show. The show will span two separate weeks: April 13-24 and April 27-May 8. This year's show is the first to take full advantage of the Dittmann facility.

Enjoy an evening of international dance
APRIL 11, 2003 — Veselica, the college's international dance company, will present its annual spring concert April 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and April 13 at 2 p.m. in Dittmann Center, Studio 1. The concert is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the Friday and Sunday performances. This year?s concert will feature a Liberian welcoming dance choreographed by Dorian Byrd, a guest artist specializing in African and African-American dance. The performance will also include dances from Afghanistan, Russia, Croatia, Hungary, Iran and New Zealand.

APRIL 11, 2003 — St. Olaf defeated St. Mary's University in a women's tennis match on Thursday, April 3rd in Winona. It was a 5-4 victory that was extremely close. The Oles were playing without the services of their number one singles player, Janelle Sagness.

APRIL 11, 2003 — The St. Olaf softball team lost a pair of MIAC games to Macalester College 9-7 and 7-5 at home April 10.

APRIL 10, 2003 — The St. Olaf baseball team raced to a seven run lead, and held on 8-6 to save a split with Concordia-Moorhead College Wednesday afternoon at Mark Almli Field. Concordia slipped by the Oles 4-3 in game one.

Student entrepreneurs reveal imaginative projects in todays tradeshow
APRIL 10, 2003 — The Finstad Office for Entrepreneurial Studies program allows students to explore, study and experience the discipline of entrepreneurship, developing his and her thinking process to include initiation, imagination, flexibility and creativity within the liberal arts. Thomforde promotes multicultural affairs and diversity dean
APRIL 9, 2003 — Eida Berrio, dean for community life and diversity at St. Olaf College, now reports directly to President Christopher M. Thomforde. Previously, Berrio reported to the provost and dean of the college. She also sits on the president's cabinet of officers. "This change will provide additional support to the work of the Office of Community Life and Diversity," Thomforde said in announcing the appointment April 1. "Her responsibilities will remain essentially the same: to lead the diversity efforts of the college, serve as the Affirmative Action officer of the college and supervise the activities of Buntrock Commons."

Berrio came to St. Olaf in August 2000 in the newly created position. In promoting Berrio, Thomforde also asked her to help create a professional development program for St. Olaf staff and administrators.

Men's tennis team falls to Hamline
APRIL 7, 2003 — The St. Olaf men's tennis team started strong against Hamline, taking a 2-1 lead going into singles competition thanks to strong doubles play. The Oles struggled in singles play, eventually losing 6-3 on Friday, April 4.

St. Olaf classics students again take top honors in national competition
APRIL 7, 2003 — Since 1980, at least one classics student from St. Olaf College has taken honors in a prestigious national competition. This year, three students won four of the 25 awards in the Maurine Dallas Watkins Contests sponsored by Eta Sigma Phi, the national classics honor society for college students.

APRIL 3, 2003 — Lindsey Weier (FY., Menomonie, Wis.) was named an All-American by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCH) as first team defender. Weier had 14 goals and 9 assists in her first year with the St. Olaf women's hockey team.

Ole fastpitch opens MIAC with sweep over Bethel
APRIL 3, 2003 — The St. Olaf fastpitch team opened conference play with a 2-1 and 7-2 sweep over Bethel College 2-1 at home on Wednesday afternoon. Solid pitching performances by Melissa Ohm (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) and Laura Torgerson (FY, Red Wing, Minn.) combined with strong defensive play held Bethel to just three runs in two games.

Osiecki finalist for national coach of the year
APRIL 3, 2003 — Tom Osiecki, head coach of the St. Olaf women's hockey team, is one of four finalists for the national Hockey Coach of the Year. The award is given by the American Hockey Coaches Association. Osiecki coached the Oles to their best season in the three years of the program, narrowly missing the post-season by one point.

Oles tumble in Game Two, split with Pipers
APRIL 2, 2003 — The St. Olaf baseball team had costly errors in the bottom of the fifth inning in game two, and lost 4-2 to Hamline University Wednesday afternoon in St. Paul, Minn. The Oles opened with a 13-3 win on the heels of Charlie Ruud's (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) six shutout innings.

APRIL 2, 2003 — A major Minnesota policy initiative regarding early childhood development is being taken seriously by state legislators and will be debated for months to come. With nearly a century of tradition behind it, the St. Olaf Band, under the direction of Timothy Mahr, is inspired to continue a tradition launched by Mahr's predecessor, Mity Johnson, in 1974 -- to perform at a cathedral or church of note once a year. This year's event, free and open to the public, will be April 13 at Central Lutheran Church.


Osiecki named MIAC Women's Hockey Coach of the Year
APRIL 1, 2003 — Tom Osiecki, head coach of the St. Olaf women's hockey team, was named MIAC Women's Hockey Coach of the Year. Osiecki led the Oles to a 10-10-4 overall record and a sixth place conference finish in the MIAC.
