Stephanie Moore was crowned Miss Iowa on Saturday, June 8, at the Adler Theatre in Davenport, Iowa -- just two weeks after graduating cum laude with a bachelor's degree in psychology and political science from St. Olaf College. Moore, who was the 2001 first runner-up in the Miss Northwest Iowa pageant, chose "Mentoring: Mobilizing the Capabilities of Today's Youth" as her platform. While she was Iowa Junior Miss, Moore worked with a young girl from an inner-city school through a St. Olaf-sponsored program and learned firsthand the rewards of mentoring. "We hit it off right from the start," Moore said. "She has such personality and potential, and she's a great writer." Moore will now take her message throughout Iowa and, come September, to the Miss America Pageant. After her reign as Miss Iowa, Moore -- who participated in study-travel programs to Australia and Bangladesh while a student at St. Olaf -- may choose a career in law or Foreign Service work.
