The Crawdaddies to perform at St. Olaf College as part of Homecoming, SEPTEMBER 27, 2001 — As part of the St. Olaf College Homecoming celebrations, the Crawdaddies will perform at St. Olaf on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. on the Boe Memorial Chapel Plaza. This exceptionally skilled band whose unique musical strains fuel fun and dancing will provide an exciting kick-off to the Homecoming weekend. St. Olaf Orchestra to perform fall concert, Saturday, Oct. 6 SEPTEMBER 27, 2001 — The St. Olaf Orchestra will perform an exciting variety of literature during their fall concert on Saturday, Oct. 6. The concert, free and open to the public, will be at 8 p.m. in Skoglund Center Auditorium. St. Olaf Norseman Band, Manitou Singers, Viking Chorus to perform in SEPTEMBER 27, 2001 — The St. Olaf College Norseman Band, Manitou Singers and Viking Chorus will make their academic-year debuts as part of the college?s Homecoming and Family Weekend celebration on Friday, Oct. 5. St. Olaf Chapel Choir, Philharmonia to present annual Vespers concert SEPTEMBER 27, 2001 — St. Olaf College?s Chapel Choir and Philharmonia will present their annual Vespers concert, a worship service of evening prayer, at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7 in Boe Memorial Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public. Volleyball Takes St. Catherine in Three SEPTEMBER 27, 2001 — The St. Olaf Volleyball team started a long stretch of away games by challenging College of St. Catherine?s in St. Paul on Wednesday, September 26. This match was a successful step toward the Ole's path to a conference title. The match was won 30-14, 30-22, and 30-14. Ole Mens Soccer Wins 2-1 SEPTEMBER 27, 2001 — On Wednesday, September 26 the St. Olaf men?s soccer team traveled to St. Paul to take on conference opponent Hamline University. The Oles entered the game 1-3-1, coming off their first win over the past weekend. Parks Earns Hat Trick in Women's Soccer Win SEPTEMBER 26, 2001 — The Oles hosted Hamline on Tuesday, September 25 and came out firing from the start. Kristi Parks (So, Plymouth, Minn.) finished the game with 3 of the Oles' 5 goals en route to a 5-1 victory. Carolyn Detjen (Jr., Juneau, Ala.) also provided a solid performance with 2 assists. Borrowed Bones dance theater presents Music of Norway at St. Olaf SEPTEMBER 26, 2001 — The Borrowed Bones Dance Theatre, a company based in the Twin Cities, will present Nordisk Sang (Music of Norway) on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Dittmann Center at St. Olaf College. St. Olaf Women's Golf Win Over Carleton and Take 6th at Luther SEPTEMBER 25, 2001 — The St. Olaf women?s golf team had a busy week with two meets. The first was at Northfield Golf Course where, using the top 4 scores, St. Olaf shot a 166 beating Carleton by 31 points. The team also competed at the Luther College Invitational Tournament with St. Olaf finishing 6th out of the 16 teams with a total score of 360. St. Olaf Mens Golf Continues Improvement at the Carleton Invite SEPTEMBER 25, 2001 — The St. Olaf Men?s golf team improved yet again in its third tournament of the year at their home course Northfield golf club in the Carleton Invitational. The Oles' Gold team came out strong on day one of the Carleton Invitational and sat tied for second place with Gustavus with a season-low team total of 321 and ended finishing 5th of 9 teams. Ole Women finish 3rd at St. Olaf Inivite SEPTEMBER 24, 2001 — Racing in the midst of the season, the Ole Women?s Cross-Country team defined themselves as a threat within the MIAC conference. As a team composed of many first-year runners, youth and inexperience was overcome by the strength and depth of the team. Ole Volleyball Remains Undefeated at 12-0 SEPTEMBER 24, 2001 — This weekend?s conference play brought the Cobbers of Concordia College and the Blazers of the College of St. Benedict to St. Olaf?s Skoglund Athletic Center. Neither team stopped the Oles undefeated winning streak this weekend, and the Oles record now stands at 12-0. Ole Mens Soccer Split Over Weekend SEPTEMBER 24, 2001 — On Saturday, September 22 and Sunday, September 23 the St. Olaf Men?s Soccer team participated in a tournament held at the University of Oshkosh. On Saturday the Oles were pitted against nationally ranked UW Oshkosh and lost 7-1. Football Team Remains Undefeated with a 33-12 Victory over Hamline SEPTEMBER 24, 2001 — The St. Olaf football team continued their winning ways this past weekend in Northfield, defeating the Hamline University Pipers by a score of 33-12. Mens Cross Country Claim First Place at Home Invitational SEPTEMBER 24, 2001 — Turbulent wind and rain didn't hold back the St. Olaf men's cross country team, as they raced to a first place victory in Saturday's 15 team St. Olaf Invitational. Faculty Panel to Conduct a Teach-In Addressing the Crisis in America SEPTEMBER 20, 2001 — All members of the college community are invited to a panel presentation and discussion on Wednesday, September 26th, from 3:15 to 5:00 p.m. in the Gold and Black Ballroom on the third floor of Buntrock Commons. The panel will consist primarily of members of the St. Olaf faculty. Two members of the Carleton College faculty have also been invited; one has been confirmed. The panelists? areas of expertise include international relations, religious studies, philosophy, ethics, economics, the Middle East, natural science, Islamic studies, and others. Ole men's soccer tie opening conference match SEPTEMBER 20, 2001 — On Wednesday, September 19 the St. Olaf Men?s Soccer team hosted conference opponent Bethel College. The Oles entered the contest 0-2 looking to get their first tally in the win column. Ole Volleyball Sweep the Gusties SEPTEMBER 20, 2001 — The Oles Volleyball team hit the road to match up against Gustavus Adolfus College this past Wednesday, September 19. The women held their record to an undefeated status by winning the match in three games. Ole Women's Soccer Beat Bethel 1-0 SEPTEMBER 19, 2001 — Conference games are the biggest part of a college soccer team?s season. Therefore, winning the first conference game of the season was a great starting point for the Oles in their quest for a MIAC championship. Ole Mens Golf Improves in Second Tournament of the Year SEPTEMBER 18, 2001 — With the first tournament of the year under their belts, the St. Olaf men?s golf team traveled to St. Cloud to compete in the St. John?s Invitational. The Oles started the tournament with an improvement from their last contest with a team total of 332. Womens Golf Team Plays at Waseca SEPTEMBER 18, 2001 — The St. Olaf women golf team opened their season at the Gustavus Adolphus Invitational Meet. The Oles were led by Naomi Schwegler (So., Ablany, Minn.) who shot 170 (combined two day score). Oles Drop Game to UW-Lacrosse, Now 3-1 SEPTEMBER 17, 2001 — Even in the midst of a loss, the St. Olaf women?s soccer team finds the energy to make a final push. The Oles fell Saturday, September 15 to the University of Wisconsin- Lacrosse with a final score of 2-1. Oles Win First Conference Match SEPTEMBER 17, 2001 — To start off conference play, the Oles Volleyball team met up with the Tommies in a duel for the number one seed in the MIAC. St. Thomas brought all guns firing, left, middle and right, but the Oles weren?t going to let anybody push them around in their own gym. This was a big match for both teams; the tension could be cut during the warm up before the match. The qualities that gained the Oles an upper-edge on the win were persistence and consistent hard work. Oles Upset Johnnies SEPTEMBER 17, 2001 — Sean Koomen?s (So., Mankato, Minn.) 22 yard field goal with 41 seconds left gave the Oles a 31-28 upset over last year?s Division III national runner-up, St. John?s University in Collegeville. The last time the Oles beat St. John?s in Collegeville was 1986. Costa Rican human rights leader Quince Duncan to receive St. Olaf honorary degree Sept. 28 SEPTEMBER 14, 2001 — Costa Rican writer, professor and internationally known human rights leader Quince Duncan will be awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters degree by St. Olaf College on Friday, Sept. 28. He also will give a public address at the college on Thursday, Sept. 27. Minnesota author Joan Oliver Goldsmith to read from new book Sept. 18 at St. Olaf College SEPTEMBER 14, 2001 — Minnesota author Joan Oliver Goldsmith will read from and sign her new book How Can We Keep From Singing: Music and the Passionate Life on Tuesday, Sept. 18,, at St. Olaf College. New Steensland Museum exhibit by Jil Evans explores work of Tiepolo; opens Saturday, Sept. 15 SEPTEMBER 12, 2001 — A new exhibit by Jil Evans, inspired by the work of baroque painter Giambattista Tiepolo, opens at St. Olaf College?s Steensland Art Museum Saturday, Sept. 15, continuing through Saturday, Oct. 28. Award-winning Minnesota author Kent Nerburn to read from new book Sept. 14 in Northfield SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 — Award-winning Minnesota author Kent Nerburn will read from and sign copies of his new book Road Angels: Searching for Home on America?s Coast of Dreams on Friday, Sept. 14, in Northfield. Ole Women Place Second In Weekend Tournament SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 — Minus earthquakes and unexpected traffic delays, the St.Olaf women's soccer team's trip to southern California was extraordinarily successful starting the season 2-0. Oles lose home opener 4-2 SEPTEMBER 10, 2001 — On Saturday, September 8 the St. Olaf Men?s Soccer team hosted non-conference opponent Marian College at Rolf Mellby Memorial Field. The Oles entered the contest 0-1 looking to get back on track. Football opens season with victory over Martin Luther College SEPTEMBER 10, 2001 — The St. Olaf football team opened the 2001 season with a very impressive 35-21 victory Saturday afternoon in Northfield over the visiting Knights from Martin Luther College. Mens Golf Team Opens Season in the Cities SEPTEMBER 10, 2001 — The men?s golf team opened up with the first tournament of the year at the Augsburg Invitational in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Coach Ken Pratt and the members of the St. Olaf men?s golf team had high hopes for the season heading into their first tournament with all five of their top golfers returning. Womens Cross Country Competes at Luther All-American Invitational SEPTEMBER 10, 2001 — The young Ole women's cross country team traveled to Luther College and raced against some of the best teams in the country. The Oles finish seventh in the tough opening invitational. St. Olaf Mens Cross Country Takes 2nd at St. Johns Invite SEPTEMBER 10, 2001 — The Olaf Men?s Cross Country team returned from the St. John's Invitational with a respectable second place finish in the nine-team field. The black and gold harriers finished a distant second to Division II South Dakota State University, but outpaced a tough St. John's squad, which placed 19th at last years' national meet and finished 2nd in the MIAC. 20th Annual Augsburg College Volleyball Invitational SEPTEMBER 10, 2001 — The Oles were on the road once again this past weekend, successfully defending their undefeated status at the Augsburg College Volleyball Invitational. St. Olaf garnered the Tournament Championship for the second year in a row. Oles Lose Opener 3-1 SEPTEMBER 6, 2001 — On Wednesday, September 5, the St. Olaf men's soccer team traveled to Des Moine s, Iowa to play non-conference opponent Grand View College. The end result was a 3-1 loss for the Oles. Volleyball Wins Tournament Upsets #8 in the Nation SEPTEMBER 3, 2001 — At their season starter, the Ole?s Volleyball team ranked 16th in the nation hit the court red hot in River Falls, Wisconsin. Going undefeated both in matches and in games, the women mixed team goals of commitment and consistency with a lot of grit to find the winning combination. |
