Performance Today program to feature Christmas Festival
DECEMBER 18, 2008Performance Today, a public radio program heard by 1.1 million people each week, will broadcast a selection from the 2007 St. Olaf Christmas Festival on Monday, Dec. 22. The show recently featured several selections from the 2008 Christmas Festival.

St. Olaf math minds place first at competition
DECEMBER 15, 2008 — A nearly perfect score earned Nate Clement '10 and Thomas McConville '09 a first-place finish at the Mathematical Association of America's team competition this fall. The duo beat more than 70 other teams, many of which had three members.

Armstrong to deliver seminar in Israel

DECEMBER 12, 2008 — Anton Armstrong '78, Tosdal Professor of Music at St. Olaf College and conductor of the St. Olaf Choir, will travel to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem to speak to Hallel, the Israel Choral Organization. His lecture will focus on Hebrew characters in African-American spirituals.

St. Olaf senior presents regeneration research at conference
DECEMBER 11, 2008 — Rachel Kneeland '09 is researching how microglia -- a type of immune cell in the nervous system -- function in earthworms, a creature that has a remarkable ability to repair its nervous system following injury. Kneeland presented her research at the LifeScience Alley Conference Dec. 10.

Historical images available for online viewing
DECEMBER 11, 2008 — The St. Olaf Archives recently made available for online viewing historical photos that portray early college buildings, people and events, and images of Northfield. A second collection includes early images of Norwegian-Americans in Minnesota.

Faculty members deliver interdisciplinary session at language conference
DECEMBER 11, 2008 — Associate Professor of French Jolene Barjasteh, Professor of Religion and Philosophy Edmund Santurri, Associate Professor of Russian Marc Robinson and Assistant Professor of History Anna Kuxhausen delivered a session focusing on literature and terrorism at the Midwest Modern Language Association's recent convention in Minneapolis.

DECEMBER 9, 2008 — On Friday St. Olaf will host former Minnesota Gov. Al Quie '50 and his biographer for a conversation about their book, Al Quie Riding Into the Sunrise: A Life of Faith, Service, and Civility.

Norwegian Christmas service to be held Tuesday
DECEMBER 8, 2008 — The Norwegian Department will host its annual Norwegian Christmas service Tuesday, Dec. 9 in Boe Chapel. The service features Norwegian Christmas carols and gospel readings. Norwegian students Ingri Wahlstroem and Genette Sekse '12 will also talk about celebrating Christmas in Norway.

St. Olaf professor receives humanities grant
DECEMBER 8, 2008 — Associate Professor of English Colin Wells recently received a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for a book he has been working on titled Poetry Wars of the Early Republic. "I look at the ways in which poets used their works to wage political and ideological warfare," he says about his book.

DECEMBER 5, 2008 — Open Doors reports that St. Olaf had the second largest number of students participating in study abroad opportunities among all baccalaureate institutions in the nation.

MPR to broadcast Christmas Festival Sunday
DECEMBER 2, 2008 — Minnesota Public Radio will present a live broadcast -- on the air and streamed online -- of the St. Olaf Christmas Festival Sunday. In addition, PBS will broadcast last year's Christmas Festival nationwide this month.

New internship program to foster social innovation
DECEMBER 2, 2008 — Mark Johnson '82 will be on campus this Thursday, Dec. 4 to speak with students about the new internship program he and his wife, Laura Estenson Johnson '82, are sponsoring. The program will give students the chance to design and implement innovative new approaches to tackle social problems.

Minnesota Orchestra to feature St. Olaf faculty member

DECEMBER 2, 2008 — Associate Professor of Music Andrea Een will be a feature soloist with the Minnesota Orchestra during their performance of "A Scandinavian Christmas" Dec. 17 and 18. She will perform two works on the Hardanger fiddle.

'Curious Words' enter St. Olaf lexicon
DECEMBER 1, 2008 — Three women have been named the winners of the first Curious-Word-of-the-Week Contest. The competition challenged St. Olaf word worms to incorporate 20 "curious" words, which were released weekly on buttons, into a short story.
