Business magazine cites St. Olaf for smart way to save money DECEMBER 17, 2006 — In a list of 101 "smart-revenue generators" and other money-saving ideas, University Business magazine cites St. Olaf for its efforts to offer phone services to neighboring Carleton College and the Northfield hospital. "St. Olaf College (Minn.) leaders found a way to cut out a utility bill, offer a service to the greater community, and earn some revenue at the same time," says the article in the December 2006 issue of the magazine. "Staff were already handling maintenance, wire pulling, and other phone system work. Starting their own phone company seemed like a logical next step." The magazine notes that St. Olaf saves upwards of $15,000 a month with the service, noting the college's ability "to sell dial-tone, long-distance, cable, and internet service throughout the area. Alumnus featured in article on conversion and faith DECEMBER 12, 2006 — St. Olaf alumnus Stefan Plambeck '85 is featured in a recent article about faith and individuals who choose to convert as adults. New art exhibit opens in Flaten Art Museum DECEMBER 10, 2006 — "New Ways and Means" featuring paintings by Christine Conley, and photography and paintings by Michael Hopkins, will be on exibit in Flaten Art Museum in Dittmann Center through Dec. 10. Both artists use traditional media and materials in new ways. The museum hours are MTWF 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Th 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and weekends 2 to 5 p.m. The gallery will be closed over Thanksgiving break, Nov. 22 to Nov. 26. Senior dance majors to present their work DECEMBER 8, 2006 — Senior dance majors will show their work, both choreography and performance, in a concert titled "89 minutes," at 7:30 p.m. in Kelsey Theater. This senior project is required for a dance major in conjunction with the senior dance seminar. Additional dancers were chosen through an audition process earlier this year. The concert is free and open to the public. St. Olaf students to perform opera buffa DECEMBER 8, 2006 — Beautiful singing and comical carryings-on mark the Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart opera "La Finta Giardiniera," that will be performed by St. Olaf students. The opera will be given Friday through Monday at 7 p.m. in Christiansen Hall of Music, Urness Recital Hall. This production is presented as part of a 'new' and permanent three-production Lyric Theatre season by the Music Department. The 2006-07 season will also include the world-premiere of the jazz opera Love Sonnets of a Hoodlum by composer James McKeel in January and The Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan in the spring. Students present research on Wal-Mart's imprint in Minnesota DECEMBER 7, 2006 — Students from History 297 will present their original research on Wal-Mart America's imprint in Minnesota and the Cannon River Watershed at 6 p.m. in the Sun and Gold Ballrooms. Jim Heynen to give reading DECEMBER 5, 2006 — Associate Professor of English and author Jim Heynen will give a reading at 7 p.m. in Rolvaag Library 525. Best known for his short-stories about "the boys," Heynen has published as a writer of poems, novels, nonfiction and short fiction. Minnesota astronaut George Pinky Nelson took a taped collection of the stories for bedtime listening on his last space mission. Heynen's most recent collection The Boys' House was named Editors' Choice for Best Books in 2001. The reading is free and open to the public. Gisselman helms Christmas Carol once again
Award-winning author Lise Lunge-Larsen to give book signing DECEMBER 3, 2006 — The St. Olaf Bookstore offers a booksigning by the award winning author Lise Lunge-Larsen. Noah's Mitten's: The Story of Felt, is an inventive and humorous book about the miracles that take place around us, even with the most ordinary things such as water and wool. Lunge-Larsen is also the author of Hidden Folk, The Race of the Birkebeiners, The Legend of the Ladyslipper and The Troll with No Heart in His Body. Annual Christmas Fest to take place beginning Nov. 30 DECEMBER 1, 2006 — "For God So Loves the World" is the theme of the 2006 Christmas Festival, an annual tradition at St. Olaf College since 1912. One of the oldest musical celebrations of Christmas in the United States, the festival will run this year from Thursday, Nov. 30, through Sunday, Dec. 3. It will be broadcast on public radio and Twin Cities Public Television. Ticket request forms for college alumni, donors and friends will be available in the September issue of St. Olaf Magazine. St. Olaf Bookstore features booksigning DECEMBER 1, 2006 — Images of Minnesota, past and present, are featured in Minnesota Yesterday & Today. Photographer Layne Kennedy and Greg Breining will be on hand for a book signing in the St. Olaf Bookstore from 6 to 7 p.m. The historic images, vintage postcards, brochures and such, along with photographs by some of the state's best photographers, give a visual insight into how Minnesota has changed.
