MARCH 23, 2006 — The term "Showcase St. Olaf" has become synonymous with the annual tours for the St. Olaf Band, Choir and Orchestra. Now, thanks to the college-wide marketing committee led by Vice President of College Relations Jan McDaniel, "Showcase St. Olaf" is heading to baseball spring training -- to meet alumni and prospective students, and to cheer on the Ole team.

Women's History Month to close with reception
MARCH 23, 2006 — The month-long celebration of Women's History Month will close with a student panel discussion and closing reception in Buntrock Commons, Valhalla room, beginning at 11:20 a.m. The religion diversity panel of eight students will be moderated by Anantanand Rambachan, religion professor. The panel discussion and closing reception are free and open to the public.

St. Olaf students prepare to embark on hurricane relief trip
MARCH 22, 2006 — More than 180 St. Olaf students are heading to the Gulf Coast this weekend to help hurricane victims in New Orleans and Biloxi, Miss., as part of the "Ole Spring Relief" program.

Book discussion to be part of Women's History Month Events
MARCH 21, 2006 — Professor and Chair of the Religion Department at Hamline University Deanna Thompson will lead a Woman's History Month book discussion of her book Crossing the Divide: Luther, Feminism, and the Cross," at 1:30 p.m. in Buntrock Commons, Heritage room. Joining in leading the discussion will be the Religion Honor Society and their advisor Greg Walter. Crossing the Divide: Luther, Feminism, and the Cross is available at the St. Olaf Bookstore. This event is free and open to the public.

The St. Olaf Cantorei will present a "Passion" meditation
MARCH 20, 2006 — The St. Olaf Cantorei, conducted by John Ferguson, will perform "A Meditation on Christ's Passion" in Boe Memorial Chapel at 7:30 p.m. on March 20. The concert is free and open to the public.

This performance will combine the reading of the St. John Passion story with performances of hymns by the choir and the congregation.


U.S. Army Chorus to present program at St. Olaf
MARCH 19, 2006 — The United States Army Chorus will give a concert at 4 p.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel. The program will include selections from Goethe's Faust, Orff's Carmina Burana, arrangements of several Stephen Foster songs and pieces from Les Miserables and Big River. This concert is free and open to the public.

Women's Studies 121 creating Women's History Month exhibit
MARCH 17, 2006 — Women in Religion: a week-long exhibit in Buntrock Commons, Crossroads, will feature notable and sometimes unknown women of achievement in religion. The Women's History Month exhibit, created by Professor Diane Leblanc's Women's Studies 121 class, is free and open to the public.

St. Olaf Jazz ensembles to provide music for swing dance
MARCH 17, 2006 — The spring swing dance, hosted by the St. Olaf Swing Club, will be held on Friday, March 17, at 9 p.m. in the Pause in Buntrock Commons. Music will be provided by student vocalists and Jazz I, II and III, conducted by Artist in Residence David Hagedorn. A group dance lesson, taught by the St. Olaf Swing Club, will be available at 8:30 p.m. Tickets, $5, are available at the door.

Visiting author Linda Hunt to give lecture at St. Olaf
MARCH 16, 2006 — Linda Hunt, the author of Bold Spirit: Helga Estby's Forgotten Walk Across Victorian America will speak at 3:30 p.m. in Viking Theater. Hunt will speak about the journey of the Norwegian immigrant Helga Estby and her daughter, who in 1896 walked from Eastern Washington to New York in competition for a $10,000 prize. This prize money would be used to save the family farm from repossession.The women braved snowstorms, hunger, thieves and mountain lions, armed with little more than a compass, a revolver and a curling iron.

Moravian College Names Thomforde as New President
MARCH 13, 2006 — St. Olaf College President Christopher M. Thomforde has been named the new president of Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa. Moravian is the nation's sixth-oldest college. Thomforde has served St. Olaf since January 2001.

Theater Department to present Wonder of the World
MARCH 12, 2006 — David Lindsay-Abaire's Wonder of the World will be presented in the Haugen Theater on the St. Olaf campus March 8-11 at 7:30 p.m. and March 11-12 at 2 p.m. This spring production features student director Max Wojtanowicz '06 from Rice, Minn. Tickets available two weeks prior to the opening of the production.

The program will include Igor Stravinsky's "Petrouchka Ballet Suite," and "Circus Polka" (for 50 Elephants), Mary Ellen Childs' "Hands" (performed by four percussionists), Shelley Hanson's "Fiddlers' Contest," and Bedrich Smetana's "Dance of the Comedians from The Bartered Bride." St. Olaf Viking Chorus to tour Wisconsin

MARCH 12, 2006 — The St. Olaf College Viking Chorus will begin a four-city tour with a performance at the 42nd annual Intercollegiate Men's Chorus seminar March 16 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The event features top male choruses and glee clubs from universities, colleges and secondary schools from around the nation.

Annual Harambe Conference to be held
MARCH 11, 2006 — The Harambe conference, "Who is Programming You?" will be held on Saturday, March 11, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Buntrock Commons. Keynote speaker will be Professor Joan Hepburn. The discussion and workshops focus on the culmination of ideas and concerns from the various multicultural organizations on campus and will include: What Color Are You Acting?, Minorities and Sexuality, Hmong Culture 101, Interracial Dating, Race and Socio-economics, and Asians in the Media.

St. Olaf to host NCAA national indoor track and field event
MARCH 10, 2006 — The National College Athletic Association NCAA indoor track and field national championships will be held at St. Olaf College March 10-11. Tostrud Center and Skoglund Athletic Center will be the site of competition for approximately 400 athletes and over 200 coaches. It is estimated that 1000 fans per day will be in attendance.

Bruce Thorn and Liz Quisgard works to be shown at St. Olaf
MARCH 10, 2006 — The art exhibit "Pattern-ing" with works by Chicago's Bruce Thorn and New York City's Liz Quisgard will be open for viewing March 10 to April 13 in Dittmann Center. Thorn, a contemporary American artist invites viewers to see the world through imagination and playfulness in his work. Quisgard, an educator, illustrator and sculptor, is well-know for her abstract work. The gallery will be closed March 25-April 1 for spring break.

St. Olaf to host NCAA Track and Field Championships

Lecture to deal with 9/11: Memory, Witness and Lamentation
MARCH 9, 2006 — Richard B. Miller, professor of religion and the director of the Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and Institutions at Indiana University, will give a public lecture at 7:30 p.m. in Holland Hall 501. The lecture "Beyond Madness and Self-Deception after 9/11: Memory, Witness and Lamentation" will deal with both the limits and the importance of doing ethics with an eye to death, mourning and history with 9/11 as the focal point.

The series premiered with The Future of Food, which highlighted the use of organic Minnesota grown popcorn along with investigating food currently on store shelves. Other topics the series will cover are food, waste, sustainable development, energy, transportation, ecology, resources, interconnectedness, economics, justice, and hope. The St. Olaf Environmental Coalition is a student-run organization that seeks to cultivate and defend greater ecological concern.

Sweet Martha will speak at St. Olaf College
MARCH 8, 2006 — Martha Olson, also known as Sweet Martha, founder of "Sweet Martha's Cookie Jar," will speak at 6 p.m. in Buntrock Commons, Viking Theater. Olson used to own a frozen yogurt shop in Minneapolis but she could not successfully get a frozen yogurt booth at the Minnesota State Fair. Instead, she tried for a chocolate-chip cookie booth back in 1979. This, clearly was an instant hit. After trying different flavors on friends, she developed her special cookie recipe. She still uses fresh dough and fresh ingredients.

Rippley writes instrumental history
MARCH 8, 2006 — St. Olaf Professor of German LaVern Rippley has written The Chemnitzer Concertina: A History and an Accolade, a book about an instrument invented in Germany in 1834 that eventually became an almost exclusively Minnesota-Wisconsin instrument.

Men's hockey gains first NCAA bid in school history
MARCH 7, 2006 — The St. Olaf men's hockey team defeated the University of St. Thomas in the MIAC Championship Saturday to gain their first NCAA Tournament bid in school history.

Immigration reform to be topic of roundtable discussion
MARCH 7, 2006 — A round table discussion on recent proposals for immigration reform at the state and national level and its impact on local communities will be held in Buntrock Commons, Black Ballroom at 7 p.m. Participants include Sara Schlauderaff,, project manager for immigration issues at Governor Pawlenty's office, Loan Huynh, from the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Susana del Leon, from Centro Campesino, and Gary Smith, Northfield Police Chief.

St. Olaf to exhibit works by contemporary pattern artists
MARCH 7, 2006 — "Pattern-ing," a joint art show featuring the work of artists Liz Quisgard and Bruce Thorn, will open in the Flaten Art Museum this week. Both artists work in patterns, Quisgard using yarn and buckram and Thorn painting with oil on canvas and linen.

Cantus to hold 10th anniversary concerts this week
MARCH 7, 2006 — Cantus, one of the most sought-after vocal ensembles in the country, has announced that it will celebrate its 10th anniversary with two concerts in honor of the music and people who have contributed to the group's success.

Boxes and Walls to be presented by St. Olaf students
MARCH 7, 2006 — Boxes and Walls, under the direction of St. Olaf students Hayley Wender and Sung Chung, will offer St. Olaf students the opportunity to gain insight into oppression and prejudice placed upon maraginalized groups of people. Seven rooms will simulate populations including mental health, body image, sexuality, non-Christian, African-American, Asian and Latino. There will be a followup question and answer session.

Sculptor Josh Garber to give public lecture
MARCH 6, 2006 — The Arnold Flaten Memorial Lecture Series presents Josh Garber, sculptor, in a public lecture at 7 p.m. in Dittmann Center, room 305. Garber was the station artist for the Light Rail Transit Station in Phoenix, Arizona in 2003 and has shown his work in solo and group exhibits in New York, Seattle, Chicago, Houston, Toronto, Montreal and London.

St. Olaf Theatre to present Wonder of the World
MARCH 6, 2006 — The St. Olaf College Theatre will present Wonder of the World, directed by St. Olaf student Max Wojtanowicz '06. This will be the fourth show in the college's 2005?06 theatrical season.

Improvised dance concert will conclude with audience input
MARCH 3, 2006 — An evening of improvised dance, music and lighting will be performed by St. Olaf faculty, staff, musicians, student dancers and alumni dancers at 7:30 p.m. in Studio One of Dittmann Center. The performers hope to address the question "What makes something Something? At the conclusion of the evening performance, the audience will give their input as to whether the performers created something or a plain old nothing.

MARCH 2, 2006 — Women and Religion is the theme chosen for this year's Women's History Month celebration. Opening events will include: Jennifer Koenig '87, campus pastor will speak at the 11 a.m. chapel service in Boe Memorial Chapel. The opening program and reception will take place at 3:45 p.m. in Buntrock Commons, Crossroads, followed by Conversation at 4:30 p.m. in room 221 with Pastor Alika Galloway, Kwanzaa Presbyterian Church and the Women of Color student group and their advisor Professor of English Joan Hepburn. All events are free and open to the public.

Julia Haack to give "green chemistry" lecture
MARCH 2, 2006 — Julie Haack, senior instructor and assistant department head for chemistry at the University of Oregon, will give a public lecture "Frontiers in Green Nanoscience" at 3:15 p.m. in Science Center 378. Haack is a leader in facilitating the identification, development and dissemination of green chemistry educational materials.

MARCH 2, 2006 — The final film of the Midwest Japanese Film Festival, Face, has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 2, at 7 p.m. at Southgate Cinema in Northfield. The event is free and open to the public.

Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra to present all-Schubert concert
MARCH 2, 2006 — The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Douglas Boyd, will give an all-Schubert concert at 8 p.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel. The program will include Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 4 (Tragic), selections from Rosamunde and the Unfinished Symphony.

Storyteller to give Norse mythology lecture at St. Olaf

MARCH 1, 2006 — Nordic storyteller Douglas "Dag" Rossman will present his lecture "Ancient Nordic Spirituality: The Northern Path to Wisdom and Balance," an exploration of the nine worlds of Norse mythology. Rossman has published more than a dozen short stories on the worlds of Norse mythology.
