Youth winter baseball clinic to be held at St. Olaf College DECEMBER 28, 2005 — A two-day non-residential baseball clinic for youth ages 13-14 will be held in Tostrud Fieldhouse Dec. 28 and 29. The clinic is a fund-raiser for the St. Olaf baseball program. Registration information is available by calling 507-646-3250. PBS presents A St. Olaf Christmas in Norway DECEMBER 21, 2005 — A unique one-hour PBS holiday special A St. Olaf Christmas in Norway will air on Twin Cities Public Television at 8 p.m. on Dec. 21 with encore presentations on Dec. 24 at 8 p.m. and Dec. 25 at 8:30 p.m. Produced by Twin Cities Public Television, St. Olaf College and the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, the program features the St. Olaf Choir with the Nidaros Cathedral Girl's Choir and soloist Randi Stene, and was filmed at Norway's Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. Exhibit by art topics class to be held in Buntrock Commons DECEMBER 15, 2005 — The opening of the annual art department Topics Exhibition will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Buntrock Commons, lower level corridor. At the end of each fall semester the Art 340 Topics class presents an exhibit of their work. Theatre class to present staged readings DECEMBER 15, 2005 — New works by students in Theatre 379: Playwriting, will give staged readings beginning at 6 p.m. in Haugen Theater. "The Ever-Versatile Dark Masterpieces" will consist of 11 30-minute productions. Refreshments will be served. Postcard From Padua to be presented at St. Olaf DECEMBER 13, 2005 — The opera buffo Postcard From Padua will be presented at 9 p.m. in Christiansen Hall of Music, Urness Recital Hall by the advanced acting for the lyric stage class. The one-hour performance, directed by Janis Hardy, set in the Padua Sanitorium for Wounded Hearts, features music by Mozart, Cole Porter, Verdi, Jason Robards Brown and Puccini performed by nine singer-actors and pianist Hannah Smith '07. "Values and Actions" student posters to be on display DECEMBER 13, 2005 — Members of the research methods class taught by Raymond DeVries, department of sociology and anthropology, will give a poster presentation in Buntrock Commons from noon to 2 p.m. The class chose to study the "values and actions" of their fellow students. Concert to feature performances by dance department seniors DECEMBER 9, 2005 — The St. Olaf Dance Department concert titled "Twisted Seeds" will be held Dec. 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Kelsey Theater. Highlighting the concert will be choreography and performances by seniors Alex De Los Santos, Melissa Riedesel and Marit Sletten. Seattle choreographer and artistic director of Lingo Dance Theatre, K.T. Niehoff, Minneapolis choreographer Carrie Lande and St. Olaf Dance Department Artist in Residence Anthony Roberts, will also be featured. Robert Flaten to speak on the vocation of diplomacy DECEMBER 8, 2005 — Robert Flaten '56, who served the American Foreign Service for 32 years, and long regarded as representing the best in American diplomacy will give a public lecture at 3:45 p.m. in Buntrock Commons, room 220. Flaten was ambassador to Rwanda, served a number of posts in the Middle East and South Asia, and was director of the Office of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh Affairs in Washingiton, D.C., was part of the team which negotiated the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan. Poet James W. Johnson to speak at St. Olaf DECEMBER 7, 2005 — James W. Johnson, poet and performer, will give a public talk at 7 p.m. in Buntrock Commons, Sun Ballroom. Johnson directed the play "The Meeting" based on the lives of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. German Advent Service to be held at St. Olaf DECEMBER 7, 2005 — A special German Advent Service will be held in Boe Memorial Chapel at 10:10 a.m. featuring The German Choir, directed by Levi Comstock '08, singing "Adventslied" in four-part harmony, plus three Christmas hymns with the congregation. A reading of the Christmas gospel will be given in Martin Luther's original German translation. Celebrate a Norwegian Christmas at chapel service DECEMBER 6, 2005 — A Norwegian Christmas will be celebrated at the 11:10 a.m. chapel service in Boe Memorial Chapel. The special service sponsored by the Norwegian Department and Norwegian House will include Christmas hymns, the Christmas gospel in Norwegian, students from Norway will tell about their holiday traditions and special music will be performed by the Norwegian Choir, directed by Margaret Hayford O'Leary, and the Lars Skjervhelm Spelemannslag, a Hardanger fiddle group led by Andrea Een. Merry Tuba Christmas to be presented at St. Olaf DECEMBER 3, 2005 — The seventh annual Merry Tuba Christmas, featuring tuba and euphonium players from southern Minnesota will be held at 3 p.m. in Buntrock Commons. Performers are encouraged to register at 12:30 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. St. Olaf responds to proposed cuts to student aid DECEMBER 2, 2005 — St. Olaf College and other private colleges in Minnesota are taking part in a national effort to oppose cuts to federal student aid. Annual Christmas festival to be held first week in December DECEMBER 2, 2005 — This year's St. Olaf Christmas Festival, "O Come to Us, Abide with Us, Our Lord Immanuel," will be held Dec. 1-3 at 7:30 p.m. and Dec. 4 at 3:30 p.m. in Skoglund Center Auditorium. The ticketed event featuring more than 500 St. Olaf student-musicians, will be broadcast to regional and national audiences by MPR and American Public Media as part of their holiday programming. St. Olaf ranked among top Fulbright producers DECEMBER 1, 2005 — St. Olaf ranks among the top bachelor's institutions with the largest number of Fulbright winners according to a recent issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education. St. Olaf TRiO programs receive Minnesota grant DECEMBER 1, 2005 — St. Olaf College has received a $42, 000 grant from the Minnesota Office of Higher Education. The grant will be used towards the Mentoring and Parent Program (MAPP), a part of the college's TRiO programs: Educational Talent Search, Upward Bound and Student Support Services.
