Retired music faculty member Don Hoiness dies
AUGUST 31, 2005 — Professional vocalist and Professor of Music Donald Hoiness died in his home earlier this week. "Exceptionally gifted Donald Hoiness revealed a voice of lovely, controlled quality," wrote a New York Herald Tribune reviewer about a Hoiness performance. "A musical nature of meticulous refinement and cultivation."

Ole scientists to participate in International Polar Year
AUGUST 29, 2005 — With a glacier already bearing his name, St. Olaf Professor of Physics Bob Jacobel is no stranger to the polar regions. Now Jacobel and colleague Brian Welch -- with a little help from their students -- are making plans to return to Antarctica under a new grant from the National Science Foundation.

AUGUST 22, 2005 — Princeton Review's The Best 361 Colleges, a popular guide for the prospective college student, calls St. Olaf "a bastion of excellence" and includes St. Olaf in "best-of" lists for food, community relations, quality of life and libraries.

St. Olaf improves overall ranking in U.S. News & World Repo
AUGUST 21, 2005 — St. Olaf College placed higher in the U.S. News & World Report magazine 2005 annual rankings of the best liberal arts colleges in the nation. The college moved up seven places in the widely read rankings, based on the strength of its academic programs, and earned special notice for its study-abroad initiatives.

Author and lecturer Dr. Stephen Covey, will be teaching from his just-released book, now No.1 on the Wall Street Journal Best-Seller List.

Student who earned perfect ACT score is coming to St. Olaf
AUGUST 17, 2005 — "For the first time in at least a decade, Minnesota tops the nation in average scores on the ACT college-entrance exam," reported the Star Tribune on Aug. 17. Kevin Friede of Edina is one of eight perfect ACT scorers in the state. He'll be starting at St. Olaf this fall as part of a class of 765 men and women who are academic stars.

Search committee appointed to name new president of St. Olaf College
AUGUST 14, 2005 — St. Olaf Board of Regents Chairman Jerrol Tostrud '60 has appointed a committee to search for a new college president. The board announced in June that the 2005-06 academic year would be the last for President Christopher Thomforde, who has served at St. Olaf since January 2001.

AUGUST 11, 2005 — Bruce Nicholson '68 took over as chairman of the board of Thrivent for Lutheran in August replacing John Gilbert who retired at the end of July.

'Sustainability' set as 2005-06 theme for new academic year
AUGUST 11, 2005 — "Sustainability" will be the college's main theme during the 2005-06 academic year, announced Provost and Dean of the College James May. The year's events include the unveiling of a food composter and wind turbine, as well as many programs planned by faculty, staff and students.

Biology professor among researchers examining water quality in Mongolia
AUGUST 10, 2005 — "Geeks in heaven" is how one scientist described the Minnesota Science Museum's St. Croix Watershed Research Station project that is examining water quality in mongolia. St. Olaf Professor of Biology Charles Umbanhowar Jr. is part of the crew looking for new species of microscopic animals and insects, and taking soil samples from dozens of lakes in Mongolia.

St. Olaf listed as 'top college' by Golf Digest
AUGUST 9, 2005 — The September issue of Golf Digest identified the best colleges for men and women golfers. St. Olaf College was included in the first ever ranking of top colleges, with the women's team ranked 24th in the Academics First category. There are three categories: Golf First -- for those students with pro tour aspirations; Academics First -- for students who want to attend the best school for academics but want an excellent golf experience; Balance -- an equal mix of golf and academics.

Golf Digest's College Rankings were determined in four categories: academics, climate, coach/facilities and golf performance. The academic rating used was the Admissions Selectivity Rating from the Princeton Review's 2006 edition of The Best 361 Colleges. The Academics First category recognizes schools that provide the best education and an opportunity to play competitive golf.


St. Olaf students wrap up summer science research
AUGUST 5, 2005 — Sixty science students participate in the college's annual Summer Research Program, conducting research in mathematics and the natural sciences with St. Olaf faculty.

Men's and women's swimming team earn academic honor
AUGUST 3, 2005 — The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) has awarded the St. Olaf men's and women's swimming team with their academic All-America swimming team honor for the spring 2005 semester. To qualify for the award, the grade point average of the entire swimming and diving squad must average atleast 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. St. Olaf ranked in the excellent category, with a 3.0 or better grade point average for all team members on the eligibility list.

St. Olaf student government president takes part in Israeli seminar

AUGUST 1, 2005 — Thomas Rusert '06 is one of fourteen student government heads traveling in Israel this week. The group is studying Israeli politics and society, meeting with local students and academics and touring key historical and political sites.

Faculty members to get additional raise along with cost-of-living increase
AUGUST 1, 2005 — In an effort to pay its professors, at all levels, on a par with its peer institutions, St. Olaf will give every faculty member an additional raise at the beginning of the new academic year. Assistant professors will see the greatest percentage increase, according to Provost and Dean Jim May.
