St. Olaf College offers six summer swim camps
JUNE 30, 2005 — St. Olaf offers youth summer swim camps co-coached by father-son duo Dave and Bob Hauck. "Stroke Technique Camps" are available for boys and girls age 10 through incoming high school seniors, and three "High Performance Camps" are offered for boys and girls ages 13 through incoming high school seniors. Aspaas '95 returns to St. Olaf music program
JUNE 28, 2005 — "It's an honor to have this opportunity," says Christopher Aspaas '95, who joined the St. Olaf Music Department as conductor of the college's Viking Chorus and Chapel Choir. In addition to his academic credentials, Aspaas is an accomplished performer.

St. Olaf College to hold summer music camp
JUNE 25, 2005 — High school students from around the nation will join together for a week of intense and exciting music-making at the St. Olaf Summer Music Camp on the college campus the week of June 25-July 1. Internationally-acclaimed music faculty at St. Olaf will direct classes, lessons and rehearsals. The week is filled with classes, lessons, rehearsals, social and recreational activities, recitals and performances.

Professor reflects on the news that Klansman convicted of manslaughter
JUNE 24, 2005 — In 2002, St. Olaf English Professor Mary Winstead published a memoir, Back to Mississippi, about her familial links to the South and her realization, years later, of her family's connection to the Ku Klux Klan. The recent conviction of Edgar Ray Killen on manslaughter charges for the 1964 killings of three Civil Rights workers brought the family history home again.

Student Congregation announces 2004-05 benevolence total
JUNE 22, 2005 — The St. Olaf Student Congregation raised more than $12,000 in benevolence funds during the 2004-05 academic year. The money was distributed to several charitable organizations, including tsunami relief and the Boe Chapel renovation fund.

McKelvey receives Hilleboe Award for student life involvement
JUNE 22, 2005 — Associate Dean of Students and Associate Professor of Mathematics Steve McKelvey has received the college's Gertrude Hilleboe Award for Faculty Involvement in Student Life.

St. Olaf College offers summer chess camp
JUNE 21, 2005 — The St. Olaf Chess Camp, OleChess, is a week (June 19 through 24) filled with intensive study with various teachers, evening activities and recreation for chess players of all strengths and levels of experience who want to improve their game while enjoying the company of fellow chess enthusiasts. Thursday afternoon will be devoted to a final round of tournament with time on Friday for individual conferences. Trophies will be awarded at the closing ceremonies on Friday afternoon. JUNE 21, 2005 — St. Olaf art faculty members are among the many arts lovers in Northfield aiming to help the community create a name for itself as an "arts town," a designation that experts say will be a boon to students, tourists, local residents -- and the economy.

Special worship service to be held at St. Olaf College
JUNE 20, 2005 — A Joint Urban Ministries Program (JUMP) will be held at St. Olaf College in the Buntrock Commons, the Pause at 7:15 p.m. on Monday as part of a Vacation Bible School that three metro area churches are holding at the college. JUMP worship service is high-energy with hip-hop dance and music. The public is invited to attend.

Annual giving for fiscal year 2005 ends on a high note
JUNE 20, 2005 — Partners in Annual Giving raised $3.5 million in 2005, largely from alumni donations. Young alumni showed their satisfaction with the college and proved their support by donating at record-setting levels.

OleChess camp brings in ranked players, masters
JUNE 20, 2005 — Chess players of all strengths and levels of experience who want to improve their game by studying with premier teachers while enjoying the company of fellow chess enthusiasts are participating in St. Olaf College's newest camp, OleChess. The weeklong camp (June 19 through 25) is filled with intensive study, evening activities and tournaments.

High School students explore their future during Minnesota Private College Week
JUNE 20, 2005 The Minnesota Private College Council is sponsoring Minnesota Private College Week, themed "Explore your future," June 20-24. The week allows prospective high school students "to compare the colleges by actually setting foot on campus," says Jill Lynch, assistant director of admissions at St. Olaf. Lynch estimates that between 600 to 1,000 students will visit St. Olaf campus this week.

Visiting students are briefly introduced to St. Olaf and enjoy a half-day of activities that include a student-led campus tour and information sessions on admissions, academics, campus life, sports and music. Students who visit four or more colleges receive four fee waiver forms to use when applying to any of the member schools.

Participating Minnesota private colleges include: Augsburg College, Bethany Lutheran College, Bethel University, Carleton College, College of St. Benedict, College of St. Catherine, College of St. Scholastica, Concordia College, Concordia University, Gustavus Adolphus College, Hamline University, Macalester College, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Saint John's University, Saint Mary's University of Minnesota, St. Olaf College and University of St. Thomas.


Ancia Saxophone Quartet to give free concert
JUNE 20, 2005 — The Ancia Saxophone Quartet will give a free concert June 20 at 7 p.m. in the Christiansen Hall of Music, Urness Recital Hall. The Quartet performs traditional works by Singelee, Damase and Lantie as well as newer compositions by Paquito D'Rivera and Jacob ter Veldhuis. The public is welcome.

St. Olaf College announces change in leadership

JUNE 17, 2005 — President Christopher M. Thomforde will leave the college after the 2005-06 academic year, Board of Regents Chair Jerry Tostrud announced to the campus community. Among Thomforde's accomplishments are a significant increase in the college endowment and the implementation of a new strategic plan.

Norwegian nurses study at St. Olaf
JUNE 17, 2005 — The St. Olaf nursing department is hosting 10 Norwegian nursing students and one teacher for a four-week course, "Health Care in America." The group is studying with Rita Glazebrook, professor of Nursing and department chair, from June 13 to July 8.

The program is in cooperation with St. Olaf and three colleges in Stavanger, Telemark and Hedmark in Norway. In the summer of odd years Norwegian students come to St. Olaf to study Health Care in America, and in January of even years, Glazebrook takes students to study Health Care in Norway. The program was developed with the help of a Nygaard Grant in 2000 and is a unique arrangement for the colleges.


Boe Chapel renovation plans announced
JUNE 15, 2005 — Assistant Vice President for Facilities Pete Sandberg recently announced plans to renovate Boe Chapel. Plans include replacing the organ and redesigning the choir loft by January 2006. The organ and a platform for choirs and ensembles to be moved to the chancel allowing the organ and choirs to face the pews. Those involved with the planning hope this adjustment will help the chapel be more conducive to its many uses.

Hanson named associate dean of students
JUNE 13, 2005 — Dean of Students Greg Kneser has announced that Associate Professor of Religion James Hanson '83 will be the new Associate Dean of Students, serving junior and senior students.

Farrell receives Kolmer Award for excellence in teaching
JUNE 13, 2005 — St. Olaf Professor of History and Director of American Studies Jim Farrell has received the Elizabeth Kolmer Award for his teaching and mentoring in the field of American Studies. "I've always thought that teaching was the most important part of my work," says Farrell.

International Kierkegaard scholars gather at St. Olaf

JUNE 11, 2005 — With some 130 scholars from 17 countries, the upcoming Fifth International Kierkegaard Conference provides fresh perspectives on Kierkegaard, says Gordon Marino, curator of the college's Kierkegaard Library. The four-day conference concludes June 15.

JUNE 11, 2005 — The 2005 Kierkegaard Conference, "Kierkegaard's Journals and Notebooks" will be held at St. Olaf College, June 11-15. Keynote speaker will be George Pattison, Lady Margaret Professor of Dilvinity in the Uninversity of Oxford, Canon of Christ Church Cathedral and distinguished Kierkegaard scholar. Also featured will be a dissertation panel with summary presentations by scholars who are writing or have just completed their dissertations. St. Olaf College music ensembles in NWA World Traveler
JUNE 6, 2005 — As part of its tribute to Norway's centennial "birthday bash," Northwest Airlines World Traveler magazine touts the St. Olaf Band, St. Olaf Choir and St. Olaf Orchestra in its June 2005 issue, mentioning that the college's premier music ensembles are returning to Norway to give several performances showcasing the great music tradition born of Norwegian immigrants who founded the college.
