CEPC Inquiry in Support of Student Learning Workgroup
Purpose and Charge
CEPC – October 2005

The Inquiry in Support of Student Learning (ISSL) workgroup is an ongoing group consisting of faculty, staff and students convened by the Curriculum and Educational Policies Committee (CEPC) and chaired by the Director of Evaluation and Assessment. Its purpose is to foster mission-driven, meaningful, and manageable assessment of student learning at St. Olaf College.

ISSL is charged with the following responsibilities:

  • Helping to develop and communicate a shared understanding of the meaning of assessment and its role in fostering improvements in curriculum, teaching and learning

  • Assisting the Office of Evaluation and Assessment in setting priorities for the collection and use of assessment data

  • Providing advice to the Office of Evaluation and Assessment on the selection and development of assessment instruments where appropriate, and facilitating communication between E&A and academic units or individual faculty members that might already have experience in or professional knowledge of particular assessment instruments

  • Where appropriate, assisting with the implementation of assessment projects

  • Reviewing assessment results, drafting statements concerning their implications, if any, for educational practices, and sharing those statements with appropriate audiences

  • Identifying potential users of assessment results and assisting with dissemination (e.g. at department and faculty meetings, in connection with program reviews, and at CILA sessions)

  • Reporting periodically to CEPC on the implications of particular assessment information for curriculum, pedagogy, and faculty development
