Introduction and Background
The Importance of Setting Standards
One of the great challenges of higher education today is for institutions
to effectively convey who they are in a clear, concise and consistent
manner to each of their stakeholders. In a world that is cluttered with
noise and information, it becomes increasingly important for organizations
to break through that clutter with consistent, articulate and easy-to-recognize
images and messages.
Within this manual you will find graphics, language and web standards for St. Olaf College, standards designed to convey the excellence and comprehensiveness of the St. Olaf experience and to make the work of staff and vendors easier, more cost effective and more efficient. Adhering to these guidelines will streamline production, reduce the potential for costly errors and improve communication.
Graphic Standards
By developing and consistently applying a professional, distinctive
graphic identity system that reflects the mission and vision of
the college, we will be able to build upon our successes to express
what we do in a consistent visual and editorial fashion. The ultimate
goal is for St. Olaf College to become universally recognized and
recognizable. A graphic identity system that achieves broad-based
support across the campus community will serve as a cornerstone
for successfully competing in an increasingly competitive environment.
The first portion of this manual covers the graphic standards of
St. Olaf. You may e-mail specific questions to designmaster@stolaf.edu.
