GEC began the year by becoming familiar with the report of the General Eduction Task Force. Associate Dean Solveig Zempel has served on the General Education Task Force and helped GEC understand the Task Force's conclusions and recommendations. CEPC was charged with coordinating revisions of the GE curriculum in light of the GE Task Force recommendations. GEC contributed to this work, however, by having a member of GEC (Dana Gross) participate during Semester I in a group looking at Inquiry in Support of Student Learning (ISSL). ISSL's major activity focused on developing a draft of learning outcomes for the existing GE attributes. GEC members reviewed and discussed drafts of the GE Learning Outcomes and provided feedback to Jo Beld, convener of ISSL.
Several changes were made to the GEC web page during the year to make it easier to use. First, a note was added to highlight the fact that GEC does not review the WRI attribute, and an email link was added to Diane LeBlanc, Director of Writing Across the Curriculum. Second, the major GE document - GE Requirements: Guidelines and Comments - was posted with separate links to each of the attributes. With this change, it became possible for users to select individual attributes instead of having to download a pdf version of the entire document. Third, links were added to GE forms, including the New Course Proposal, New Course Rationale, Existing Course Proposal, and RAtionale for General Education.
At the request of the Registrar's Office, GEC reviewed documents with statements about General Education Accreditation of Transfer Work and General Education Accreditation of Off-Campus Work. These statements are posted on the GEC web page.
GEC's prinicpal activity, however, was to review proposals to attach GE attributes to new and existing courses. In 2004-2005, GEC approved proposals for 53 courses, eight of which were proposals to attache two GE creidts. Attributes were approved in all categories except BST-B and BTS-T: FOL (3), ORC (8), MAR (1), PHA (1), HWC (4), MCS-G (9), MCS-D (4), ALS-A (7), ALS-L (11), NST/NSL (3), HBS (7), and EIN (3).
