Minutes of the 2006 May Faculty Meeting
President Thomforde called the meeting to order at 11:30 a.m.
Pastor Benson opened the meeting with prayer.
The minutes for the April meeting of the faculty were approved.
President's Remarks
President Thomforde thanked the faculty for the welcome it gave him when he came and the collegiality it expressed since. He expressed gratitude for the faculty's work. He asked for forgiveness where due, apologized for wrong done, and honors not accorded. He concluded his remarks by reading from David Hume about everyday graces.
Order of Business
Registrar
Mary Cisar moved to graduate the class of 2006 (24 April), which was seconded by faculty members who are parents to graduating seniors. The motion passed.
CEPC
Jo Beld moved CEPC 05/06-11, which was seconded. She introduced the motion. Matt Rohn offered an amendment to guideline #3 that "visual" be inserted. Jo Beld accepted this as a friendly amendment and David Van Wylen spoke in favor of this amendment. The motion passed as amended.
Corliss Swain moved CEPC 05/06-12, which was seconded and then passed.
IDOCS
Jeane DeLaney moved IDOCS 05/06-3, which was seconded and then passed.
Jeane DeLaney moved IDOCS 05/06-4, which was seconded. During discussion, DeAne Lagerquist asked why the course receives a MCS-D credit. Bob Entenmann replied that the course considers emigration and therefore warrants such credit. The motion then passed.
RPC
Anne Groton moved Canary 05/06-7, which was seconded. During discussion, Kris Thalhammer asked that a document projector be used when a committee presents a motion that it has distributed only in electronic form. The motion passed.
Nominating Committee
On behalf of the nominating committee, Bob Hauck announced that three positions in last month's ballot had either a tie or no candidate received a majority of votes. These three positions were submitted to the faculty for another vote.
Parking
Gary Wicks asked the faculty to encourage biking and walking on campus instead of driving. He appealed to the faculty to revisit the policy for parking rationale.
Dean's Remarks
Dean May remarked that he remembered that on this day 36 years ago he observed first-hand the Kent State Massacre and reminded the faculty that without past there is no future. He also reminded the faculty of Honors Day and reported that searches for tenure-track positions have been completed successfully. Finally, Dean May reported that the College has made progress in improving faculty salaries in all areas.
Announcements
Rika Ito announced an upcoming visit from Hiroshima survivors, 23 Sept-29 Sept.
Jo Beld will send an email to the faculty about a colloquium on 12 June, which will be open to any faculty member.
Ed Langerak expressed gratitude for President Thomforde's grace this past year, offered him his thanks, and wished him Godspeed.
Jonathan Hill noted that he has increasingly appreciated the President's taste in signs.
Jim Farrell announced that compost from the College's composter went onto flowerbeds yesterday.
The meeting adjourned at 12:14 pm.
