Mathematics Education/Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at St. Olaf College seeks a person with interest and expertise in both secondary mathematics education and mathematics, for a tenure-track assistant or associate professor position beginning September, 2010. Preference will be given to candidates with either (i) a doctorate in mathematics education and at least master's level background in mathematics, or (ii) a doctorate in mathematics with significant graduate coursework in mathematics education. Teaching experience at the secondary level and with diverse students is highly desirable.
Responsibilities include directing the secondary mathematics education program, teaching four or five mathematics courses per year (mostly at calculus level and above), and scholarly work in mathematics or mathematics education. The director of the mathematics education program teaches the mathematics methods course, advises prospective teachers, supervises student teachers, serves as liaison to the Education Department, and contributes to the mathematics education community outside of St. Olaf through workshops, consulting, leadership in professional organizations, or similar activity.
The mathematics program at St. Olaf College is among the largest and most successful at American undergraduate institutions. Graduating about 65 mathematics majors, 20 statistics concentrators, and 8 computer science majors annually, St. Olaf is among the nation’s top undergraduate origins of Ph.D.’s in the mathematical sciences. The department regularly receives grants, including recent ones from the NSF, the NIH, and the US Forest Service. A grant from the NSF’s S-STEM program, which supports majoring in mathematics by members of traditionally under-represented groups, reflects our commitment to increasing diversity among our majors.
St. Olaf's teacher education program is accredited by NCATE and offers seven secondary (5-12) and ten K-12 teaching licenses that are approved by the Minnesota Board of Teaching. Students in the mathematics licensure program complete a mathematics major and courses in education. (See http://www.stolaf.edu/people/wallace/Courses/mathedmajor.html for more details.) Preparing successful teachers to meet the needs of all students and prosper in our complex, highly sophisticated, multicultural society is the centerpiece of St. Olaf’s education program.
