Beginning College Survey of Student Engagement (BCSSE)
Previous results and reports
St. Olaf has participated in BCSSE since Fall 2007. In Fall 2010, BCSSE was completed by 511 incoming first-years (60% of the entering class). Results suggested that, compared to students at other participating baccalaureate institutions, incoming St. Olaf first-years were somewhat more educationally engaged during their last year of high school and had somewhat higher expectations for their own academic engagement during college. They evaluated their academic preparation similarly and expected to persevere when challenged. However, St. Olaf students were more likely to expect to be challenged, and to rate highly the importance of an academic environment that is both challenging and supportive, than their counterparts at other schools.
