The Essential Learning Outcomes Assessment (ELOA) Questionnaire

This 20-minute questionnaire elicits information about students’ prior learning experiences, current understandings, and future aspirations in relation to the “essential learning outcomes” of a college education, as identified by the Association of American Colleges and Universities. The questionnaire was developed by a team of St. Olaf faculty and staff, and piloted with entering first-year students during Week One in Fall 2009, and with graduating seniors in Spring 2010.

The learning outcomes addressed in the questionnaire include:

  • knowledge of human cultures and the physical and natural world;
  • intellectual and practical skills (such as critical thinking, written and oral communication, quantitative literacy, and information literacy);
  • skills that support personal and social responsibility (such as global civic knowledge and engagement, ethical reasoning, and intercultural competency);
  • skills that foster advanced learning (such as integrative thinking).
