Faculty FTE Spreadsheet Definitions - 1995-96 through 2001-02

Note: On the FTE spreadsheet, faculty time is accounted for in two ways--according to where faculty teach and work, and according to faculty members' home departments. These are often not the same. The right-most column Total Department FTE of the first section entitled Departmental FTE shows how faculty are distributed by academic program, while the Total Faculty column of the secton Summary FTE shows how they are distributed to home departments. Each column produces the same total after appropriate adjustments have been made for non-departmental functions. The right-most column of the entire spreadsheet, entitled Department Total Check, displays the total of all faculty assigned to each department and Faculty, combining both instructional and non-instructional assignments.

In the following descriptions, deeply indented italicized definitions represent subtotals that are combined into more general categories represented by boldface definitions with smaller indent. Overall headings represent major categories of the spreadsheet.

Finally, note that the actual structure of the spreadsheet has changed from year to year in minor ways, and the summaries provided on the web offer only a sample of relevant columns (or rows). The definitions provided here apply literally only to the recent spreadsheets. However, earlier ones use column headings that are ancestors of those described below and should be recognizeable from context.
