AAUP Salary & Compensation Scales

1965-66 - 2010-11

The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) annually reports on average salary and compensation in colleges and universities. For several decades, St. Olaf has taken as one of its salary and compensation targets the goal of achieving a "1" rating at each rank on the AAUP scale for baccalaureate insitutions. This page traces a 45 year history of St. Olaf salary and compensation averages in relation to this goal.

The AAUP ratings are determined by percentiles: "1" means 80th percentile, "1+" means 95th percentile. (Although AAUP provides data on the 90th percentile, they do not assign any target number to that level.) This web page displays the record of St. Olaf salary and compensation in five-year intervals from 1965 to 2010 in comparison with the AAUP scales for the 80th, 90th, and 95th percentiles. This information is presented in two forms: first through graphs, then with dollar amounts.

(Note: In the 1960s, rather than using empirical percentiles, AAUP set targets for predicted--or desired--percentiles for ratings such as "1" and "1+". In the absence of other data, these targets are reported here (for 1965-66 only) as if they were the actual percentiles. Also, due to variation in AAUP reporting methods, some percentiles in the 1970s were not reported directly but had to be estimated from related data.)

Graphical Representations

The graphs are intended to provide a visual comparison of St. Olaf salaries and compensation with the three AAUP scales--80th, 90th, and 95th percentiles. Since our target has always been the 80th percentile (a "1" rating), each graph is done in relation to the 80th percentile. Thus the 80th percentile appears as a constant horizontal line, with the graphs of the 90th percentile, the 95th percentile, and the St. Olaf record (dotted) moving up and down in relation to this line.

There are four graphs, one for each rank. Each graph contains two parts separated by a dotted line. The top part depicts compensation, the lower part salaries. In each part, the horizontal line (displaying triangular marks) represents the 80th percentile, and the other lines, as labeled, the relative positions of the 90th, 95th, and St. Olaf data. Original Data

The following table shows, for each rank and each pentad from 1965 through 2010, the AAUP scales for the 95th, 90th, and 80th percentiles in comparison with actual St. Olaf average salaries. St. Olaf data is taken from the reports that St. Olaf submits annually to AAUP; AAUP data is taken from the reports published annually in Academe and its predecessor the AAUP Bulletin. (Note: Numbers in italics are estimates calculated on the basis of other given data.)
