Student-Faculty Ratios, most recent 10 years

This web page contains a summary of data concerning total numbers of students and faculty following national definitions established by the AAUP and the Common Data Set:

  • Student counts are officially established by the Registrar at the 10th day of classes in the fall semester.
  • Full-time faculty are defined as those full time employees whose "primary regular assignment" is instruction, excluding faculty on leave without pay, sabbatical replacements, librarians, coaches, and administrators (even if the latter do some teaching). All others who teach are counted (a "headcount") as part-time.
  • The full time equivalent (FTE) for both students and faculty is estimated by adding to the full time total one-third the part time total: FTE = FT + (1/3)PT. The ratio of these two estimates is the Student-Faculty Ratio (SFR).

The table below also shows, for comparison, three totals from St. Olaf's staff planning spreadsheet--teaching faculty, instructional faculty, and total faculty. These tallies reflect actual work assignments of faculty: the first (teaching) concerns classroom teaching, the second (instructional) adds to teaching all activites paid for by the Dean of the College budget (e.g., student activities, advising, departmental and program administration, sabbatical leaves); the third (total) adds all assignments that are either unpaid (e.g., some leaves) or paid from external grants, other instituions, or other lines in the college budget (e.g., college administration). See St. Olaf Faculty FTE Distribution for details.
