Tips for a Successful Registration
First-Year Religion and Writing Course Submission for
Semester I, 2010-2011
- To make the registration process as useful as possible to all, plan to submit your section choices as early as possible during the open registration period, July 26 - August 5 at 4:00 p.m.
- Review the First Year Writing or Religion 121 course descriptions and choose a minimum of 5-8 different sections so you can add 5-8 different course schedules.
- Be flexible and include alternate schedules that contain different sections of your assigned course. One section of a course may close, but others may still be available. Space is limited in each section offered.
- If a section theme you are interested in adding is offered in multiple sections, add a new course schedule for each section of this particular theme.
- Registration passes run vertically (down!) to place all students in one course. Rank your schedules in order of preference using the arrows. Only ONE section should be listed in each individual course schedule you add.
- TRANSFER STUDENTS needing to take Religion and/or First Year Writing must submit section choices using the SIS web registration process.
- AMERICAN CONVERSATIONS students will automatically be pre-registered into AMCON 101 by the SIS registration system. AMCON 101 will meet on MWF at 10:45-11:40. If you are selected to take Religion 121 in semester I, avoid choosing religion sections with time conflicts with AMCON 101.
- GREAT CONVERSATION students will automatically be pre-registered into GCON 113 by the SIS registration system.
- APPROVED MUSIC MAJOR students should select sections of Writing 111 or Religion 121 that will not meet at the same time as your registered Music 111 and 113 courses.
- ATHLETES PARTICIPATING IN FALL SEMESTER INTERCOLLEGIATE SPORTS need to consider when their practice times are scheduled and avoid choosing courses that are offered at the same time.
- STUDENTS WISHING TO ENROLL IN SEMESTER I COURSES WITH LABS should take this into consideration when looking at time periods for Religion or Writing sections. Review the Class and Lab within the SIS to see when sections of desired lab courses meet. Try to avoid obivous time conflicts with your selected Religion or Writing course (i.e., Physics 124 or 130, Chemistry 125 offered only in fall and required for potential majors).
- Make sure that your schedules are all valid. A valid schedule contains NONE of the following: time conflicts, repeats of courses you have taken; courses for which you lack pre-requisites; closed courses or courses closed to your class year.
- Pre-requisites: The computer looks only at your previous St. Olaf courses in determining if you meet a pre-requisite for a course.
- If you know that you meet the pre-requisite by some other means (i.e., an AP exam, non-St. Olaf coursework), you can add that course to your schedule.
- The computer will NOT block your registration because of lack of pre-requisite. If, however, you really have NOT met the pre-requisite, do NOT try to register for the course!
- For sections in the highest priority, consider placing them at the top of your schedule list schedules. If there are multiple sections of the same course theme, make sure to include the other section offered as an alternate schedule option.
- Use the Registration Tracking Tool at the bottom of the SIS schedules page to get a sense of how your choices relate to those of all other students who have submitted schedule choices. Check back periodically while course choice submission is open to see if any adjustments need to be made as more students submit schedule choices.
- **Even if the tracking tool suggests you might get into a certain set of courses, make sure you keep sufficient alternate schedules in your list of schedules!**
